Jets, Giants Both Will Play Games On 10th Anniversary Of 9/11

The NFL yesterday revealed its schedule for the '11 season, which will kick off Sept. 8 with a Thursday night game on NBC featuring Saints-Packers, the last two Super Bowl champions. ESPN will air 17 primetime games, beginning with a "MNF" doubleheader on Sept. 12 featuring Patriots-Dolphins and Raiders-Broncos. NFL Network kicks off its coverage with Raiders-Chargers on Nov. 10 (THE DAILY). The NFL "for a second straight season" has slotted an "SNF" game "opposite what will be Game 4 of the World Series on Fox" (DAILY VARIETY, 4/20).

The Giants will play the Redskins at FedEx Field in a day game on Sept. 11, while the Jets will host the Cowboys at New Meadowlands Stadium that night. There had been “speculation that the Jets would host the Giants to mark” the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks, but a source said that “given the complexities of the schedule, the league could not make that game work for the opener” (N.Y. TIMES, 4/20).

NFL, NFLPA Anticipate Ruling Soon From Judge Susan Nelson

U.S. District Judge Susan Nelson could rule on the NFLPA's request for an injunction against the lockout "as soon as today," despite the fact that the mediated talks she ordered between the NFL and NFLPA are still ongoing. Nelson two weeks ago said that "her ruling would come 'in a couple of weeks,' leading sources on both sides to say they expect it any day now." The two sides met in mediation "for about seven hours" yesterday and will resume talks today in Minneapolis (N.Y. POST, 4/20).

NFL Draft Prospect RB Mark Ingram Will Be Subway Spokesperson

By Terry Lefton

Former Univ. of Alabama RB Mark Ingram will be a spokesman for Subway restaurants, starting with activity around next week’s NFL Draft. Ingram will make appearances, blog and do a PR tour for the QSR in N.Y. next week. For the past several years, Subway has selected a top collegian to put a face on its marketing efforts around the draft, generally one of the first endorsements for those players.

"He’s got a great football pedigree, since his dad played in the NFL. We haven’t had a player from Alabama before and most importantly, he’s already a fan of Subway and it's important for us to have a presence in and around an event that delivers as many eyeballs as the NFL Draft does for a mass brand like ours," said Subway CMO Tony Pace. Former Subway college football endorsers include Ndamukong Suh, Michael Crabtree and Reggie Bush.

Ingram will also be on the cover of EA Sports' "NCAA Football 12" video game when it hits retail in July.

Comcast SportsNet Bay Area To Produce Content For NBC Affiliate

By John Ourand

In yet another sign of the Comcast-NBC integration, Comcast SportsNet Bay Area will produce live daily sports news segments for the over-the-air NBC affiliate in the Bay Area starting in June. The segments will hit during the 6:00pm PT and 11:00pm newscasts. Bay Area marks the first Comcast RSN that will produce news for the NBC owned and operated affiliate in the area and could provide a model in other markets where Comcast owns an RSN and NBC owns a local broadcast affiliate. In the Bay Area, the NBC affiliate has been using CSN's production of Giants games since '08.

The deal also will see the broadcast channel pick up CSN-produced documentaries and magazine shows that will air monthly on weekend evenings. NBC and CSN are building a new set at CSN's studios to produce the sports newscasts. The company says the merge will not lead to job reductions; rather, they expect it to create new positions.

Browns, Cleveland To Announce Plans For Mixed-Use Development

The Browns and the city of Cleveland today will unveil plans for a mixed-use development on "more than 20 acres north of Cleveland Browns Stadium." Browns officials envision a project that includes athletic fields, a 1,000-car parking garage and a "potential sports-medicine or wellness facility." The team has hired consulting firm Hammes Co. to study the potential of the lakefront site, which would be "largely owned by the city." The team and city also are expected to make "a bid to bring the Cleveland Clinic to the project" (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 4/20).

A's, Phoenix Poised To Extend Spring Training Arrangements

The A's and the city of Phoenix are "likely to extend their spring-training arrangements for another 10 years, starting in 2015," with the Phoenix City Council expected to approve the deal today. UMass To Join MAC In Football, Moving From FCS To FBS

The Univ. of Massachusetts today will announce that it is "making the jump in football from the FCS to the FBS level" and will begin playing league games in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) by '12. UMass, like fellow Atlantic 10 school Temple, will join the MAC "in football only," giving the conference a total of 14 football teams. The move will be announced at Gillette Stadium, "which is significant since that venue will host the majority of UMass' home games" (BOSTON GLOBE, 4/20).

Quick Hits....

"The sport where the NCAA can generate the biggest revenue and they end up giving it away for free. If the university presidents ever really truly understood what is happening, they would be in disbelief. The NCAA leadership over the past 30 years has been lulled to sleep while this transformation took place" – Boise State AD Gene Bleymaier, on the BCS (IDAHO STATESMAN, 4/19).

"They're making improvements to the arena. Are they not? Are they not making $800 million worth of improvements to the arena? It's a fabulous place to play, the atmosphere is great – it's the world's most famous arena. All I said was that the conditions in the dressing room were not up to par" – Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau, on his previous comments about Madison Square Garden (WASHINGTONTIMES.com, 4/19).

"We are absolutely still committed to this franchise, and we are still putting our energy into getting the transaction done" – Brad Goldberg, Vice Chair of Arizona Hockey Holdings, the Matthew Hulsizer-led group attempting to buy the Coyotes (FOXSPORTSARIZONA.com, 4/19).

"Maybe I should just put out like other people, throw stuff out, that 'Hey, the deal's done, we're staying'" – Coyotes coach Dave Tippett, jokingly, on speculation that the team will relocate to Winnipeg in the offseason (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 4/20).

"It's one part of a marketing campaign. We are not promoting unlimited drinking. We're saying come out to a party. The people who don't like it are traditionalist and old people. And I'm telling you, if we don't get young people out here we're done" – Maryland Jockey Club President & COO Tom Chuckas, on this year's Kegasus mascot for The Preakness (Baltimore SUN, 4/20).

Final Jeopardy!

Last night's "Final Jeopardy!" category was "Authors."

"He died in 1995, the day before the opening of a Glasgow Veterinary Library named for him."

Last night's edition of "Jeopardy!" featured the category "25-Game Winners."

For $200: "In 1961 Whitey Ford won 25 games for this American League team."

For $400: "In 1956 Don Newcombe won 27 games for this National League team."

For $600: "Terrific! He racked up 25 wins for the miraculous 1969 Mets."

For $800: "The last major league 30-game winner was Denny McLain, for this team in 1968."

For $1000: "In 1972 Steve Carlton was a 27-game winner for this team that won 59 the whole season."

Laugh Track....

CBS' "Late Show" and NBC's "The Tonight Show" are airing reruns this week.

ABC's Jimmy Kimmel: "President Obama celebrated Passover with the annual White House Seder dinner last night. This morning, Donald Trump demanded to see his bar mitzvah certificate. … Donald Trump is still pounding that birth certificate drum. He's getting a lot of mileage out of it. He did two exclusive interviews with 'Good Morning America' and the 'Today' show, how they are exclusive, I'm not exactly sure, but either he really is thinking about running for president or this is the best episode of 'Punk'd' ever. He's got investigators in Hawaii looking for Obama's birth certificate. I guess if they don't find one that means he's not American. Why stop there? How do we know for sure Obama is black? Has he produced a black certificate? … Trump also said he'll release his personal tax returns if Obama shows his birth certificate. That might be the first 'you show me yours I'll show you mine' in a presidential campaign since, probably, Bill Clinton. … Hines Ward of the Pittsburgh Steelers has emerged now as the front runner in the competition (on ABC's "DWTS"). Not only did he get the top score last night, but he made an incredible catch on a very poorly thrown Kirstie Alley. … Before the season, I bet on Hines Ward to win this thing. Betting on football players to win is my way of maintaining just a shred of masculinity while I'm gambling on ballroom dancing. … John Boehner is breaking a tradition that has been held for a long time by previous speakers. He will not host a Cinco de Mayo reception at the Capitol next month. He insists he doesn't have anything against Mexican-Americans. In fact, he says his Speaker of the Housekeeper is a Mexican-American. … Apparently seeing the poor defenseless piñatas beaten with a stick makes him cry" ("Jimmy Kimmel Live," ABC, 4/19).

The following is an excerpt from Norm MacDonald's opening monologue on Comedy Central's "Sports Show with Norm MacDonald" last night: "Our top story tonight: With just two games left before the playoffs, Kobe Bryant received a technical foul and uttered this phrase after returning to the bench." Video was shown of Bryant uttering a homophobic slur. MacDonald: "In Kobe's defense he was referring to Thai referee Pheoh-Kaeng Phei-Ghat, Thailand's most famous referee. Kobe has apologized to the ref and to the NBA and fined $100,000. ... The NBA playoffs are here, or as I like to call them, April, May, June and Possibly Into July Madness. ... Magic center Dwight Howard has been named the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year. When told of the award, Howard said, 'Defensive? Me? Since when?' ... On Friday, three of the biggest online poker sites were charged with bank fraud, illegal gambling and money laundering. 'I hope they don't start arresting online poker players,' said me. ... Sherrie Daly, ex-wife of John Daly, recently published a tell-all book entitled 'Teed Off.' In her book, she alleges that on the 16th hole of the TPC Southwind course there are prostitutes offering oral sex in the bushes. This raises an interesting question: Where is the TPC Southwind course? This raises another interesting question: Can I just play the back three?" ("Sports Show with Norm MacDonald," Comedy Central, 4/19).

For $1000: "Who are the Phillies?"
