Vikings Stadium Plan Headed To State Capitol For Consideration

A plan for spending taxpayer dollars to help build a new Vikings stadium today "will be submitted" to the Minnesota state Legislature in St. Paul. The plan would raise up to $300M in state funds through such streams as a sales tax on memorabilia and luxury seats, a lottery game and an income tax on the team's players – "a proposition that might be challenged in court by the Vikings or by the NFL." It would also "allow a local government to levy its own taxes." The bill will become public when it is formally introduced Monday to the state House and Senate (ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, 4/8).

Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton said of the proposal, "I think it's very doable, and if the Legislature gets behind it, we'll have a stadium" (ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, 4/8).

YES Network, DirecTV Reach Deal In Time For Yankees-Red Sox Series

YES Network and DirecTV have reached a carriage deal that will "prevent any disruption in service." This comes ahead of the Yankees-Red Sox series that begins today. Another N.Y. RSN, SportsNet N.Y., has been absent from Dish Network since last week, and there "appears to be little hope of a deal anytime soon." SNY also is "talking to DirecTV about a new deal" (N.Y. TIMES, 4/8).

Meanwhile, Dish Network and Charter Communications made deals yesterday to "assure their subscribers will see Saturday's Twins game" on FS North. Mediacom and Cable One, which also have footprints in the upper Midwest, "have yet to strike a deal with FSN." Those two providers make up about 9% of the people who get FS North (STARTRIBUNE.com, 4/7).

Greater Police Presence At Dodger Stadium After Assault On Giants Fan

After the "unprovoked attack last week at Dodger Stadium that left a San Francisco Giants fan with brain damage," L.A. Police Chief Charlie Beck yesterday "announced a plan to significantly increase the number of police officers on patrol during games." Beck said that "'at the absolute minimum' he would double the 30 to 40 uniformed officers who typically are deployed at games" (L.A. TIMES, 4/8).

Meanwhile, the Padres are "reviewing their security measures for this weekend's three games" against the Dodgers at Petco Park in response to the incident. Padres VP/Stadium Operation Mark Guglielmo said in an e-mail, "We will increase our staffing levels for this series with the Dodgers in addition to paying particular attention to specific areas both inside and outside the ballpark" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 4/8).

IOC Could Help Fast Track LOCOG-BOA Deal For '12 Games Profits

The IOC is "set to help break the deadlock" between the British Olympic Association and LOCOG by "offering an olive branch of several million pounds during fresh talks" on the dispute over how profit from the '12 London Games is to be shared. The parties are slated to meet "in the next few days." It "appears that any IOC intervention may help solve the BOA's short-term cash-flow issues and fast track a deal" (London TELEGRAPH, 4/7).

The agreement allows iParty to use the character Wally the Green Monster in TV ads and other marketing efforts. Also, the chain will run several Red Sox-related promotions in stores and online. iParty will be featured on Fenway Park's new electronic scoreboard, where it will be described as the "Official Party Store" of the Red Sox (iParty).

Last night's "Final Jeopardy!" category was "Literary Quotations."

"Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Frost remarked that this is what gets 'lost in translation.'"

Laugh Track....

CBS' "Late Show" last night aired a rerun.

NBC's Jay Leno: "A lot of sports in the news. Three Butler players announced they are leaving school early to enter the NBA draft. Did you see the championship game the other night? I think they must have left during halftime! … The Boston Red Sox now have lost their first six games. They're 0 and 6. Even Charlie Sheen's going 'Duh! Losing!' … But the good news, the Red Sox got a shipment of all-natural flaxseed oil from Barry Bonds. So I think they're going to be okay. … Some big news out of the Barry Bonds trial: The defense stopped the prosecution from introducing a key piece of evidence and now, just about every legal expert says that Barry may be acquitted because all the prosecution has is the mistress' testimony about the size of his sex organ. The law's clear. You cannot convict on circumcision evidence. … Congratulations to Ben Roethlisberger. He is engaged to his girlfriend. She said no, but of course you know Ben, he took that as a yes. If you’d like to get a gift, he's registered at Bed, Battery and Beyond. … Tomorrow is the big threat of that government shutdown. See, a lot of people wonder what a government shutdown would be like. I think a lot more people wonder what a government running properly would be like. … John Boehner, Speaker of the House, he's not backing down one bit. He says he will cry all through the weekend if he has to. … How embarrassing is this? To compensate for America's weight gain, the Coast Guard is now planning to reduce the number of people it will allow on ferries and sightseeing boats. The Coast Guard is now grouping boat passengers in three sizes: Plus size, super size and capsize" ("The Tonight Show," NBC, 4/7).

LATE NIGHT LAUGHS:

Last night's edition of ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live" aired a video from the first round of The Masters, with commentary from host Jimmy Kimmel's Uncle Frank. Kimmel introduced the clip saying, "Meanwhile, in boring sports, The Masters has begun. The Masters mostly appeals to older white men, which is why they run a urinary incontinence commercial every ten minutes. CBS is trying to spice things up by putting new blood in the broadcast booth and I think the new guy is very good." The video showed the golf course, as well as Phil Mickelson chipping onto the green, and Uncle Frank's play-by-play. Uncle Frank: "Okay. It's the first day of The Masters. What a court. Beautiful scenery, birds all around the place, chirping. Chirp, chirp, chirp. They're golf birds. Look at that flag in the middle of the court. A yellow flag, I don't know what country that represents or why the ball is going by it, but it's a pretty flag." Uncle Frank went on to introduce Geoff Ogilvy during a successful putt: "Here's Goof Ugilive. Wow. This game is real easy." Then Uncle Frank said during a short putt from Jim Furyk, "Okay, there he is. There's a short shot. Into the hole, into the hole -- whoa! What a shot. And he waved to the ball because he was so happy. Everybody did good today at The Masters and nobody got hurt. What a day! Wow" ("Jimmy Kimmel Live," ABC, 4/7)

BYU G Jimmer Fredette and UConn G Kemba Walker were in the audience of ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live" last night as the two players are in California as finalists for the Wooden Award. Kimmel asked them if they wanted to arm wrestle for it and both declined. He also asked them if, since they are going to be millionaires soon, they think about that when they go to the ATM and try to get $20 out. Both players laughed and said, "Hopefully" ("Jimmy Kimmel Live," ABC, 4/7).
