NBA BOG Meetings To Include Updates On Sale Of Pistons Franchise

By John Lombardo

NBA owners will gather today and tomorrow at the St. Regis Hotel in N.Y. for the league's annual BOG meeting held at the end of the regular season. On the agenda is an update of CBA talks and a briefing on the league’s regular-season business as postseason play begins on Saturday. Owners will be updated on the prospective relocation of the Kings and will be briefed on the pending sale on the Pistons to Tom Gores, who is expected to attend the meeting. No vote on the Pistons sale is expected.

Kevin Johnson To Present NBA BOG With Case For Kings To Stay

Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson today will make a presentation to the NBA BOG in an attempt to "sway owners to vote against" the Kings relocating to Anaheim. Kings Owners Joe and Gavin Maloof, who have until Monday to file for relocation, also "will present their case to the board." As part of his pitch, Johnson will note that the Kings at one point had "19 sellout years" and that losing the team would make Sacramento "the largest market without a major pro sports franchise" (USA TODAY, 4/14). Icon Venue Group President & CEO Tim Romani, whose company is working on an arena study in Sacramento, will accompany Johnson (SACBEE.com, 4/12).

Ducks Owner Henry Samueli is scheduled to be in N.Y. as part of the Anaheim contingent alongside Mayor Tom Tait, City Manager Tom Wood and Anaheim Arena Management Chair Michael Schulman. Samueli had planned to "fly all night by private jet" after last night's Predators-Ducks Stanley Cup Playoff Game One at Honda Center (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 4/14).

NFL, NFLPA Today Will Resume Court-Ordered Mediated Talks

NFL and NFLPA reps resume mediation today in Minneapolis for the "first time since negotiations broke down March 11" in DC. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and NFLPA Exec Dir DeMaurice Smith are "expected to be among the participants" at the mediation, ordered by U.S. District Judge Susan Nelson. It will be the "first contact" between Goodell and Smith "since talks collapsed last month." Nelson seems "anxious to bring the sides together in mediation, although it's still no guarantee that the labor problems will be resolved" (NEWSDAY, 4/14).

Goodell To Take Part In Browns Conference Call With Ticket Holders

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell today will join Browns President Mike Holmgren and GM Tom Heckert on a conference call with Browns season-ticket holders, club-level members, suite holders and corporate partners to "discuss the upcoming season." The call, hosted by WTAM-AM personality and Browns Radio Network studio host Mike Snyder, will last "about an hour with each of the participants answering questions for about 20 minutes" (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 4/14).

Kobe Bryant Discusses His Use Of Homophobic Slur During Game

Lakers G Kobe Bryant appeared on ESPN Radio's "The Mason & Ireland Show" in L.A. to talk about his use of a homophobic slur and being fined $100,000 by the NBA. Bryant: "I don't want this issue to be a part of something or to magnify something that shouldn't be." Bryant said he plans "on talking to" gay and lesbian groups because he believes "it's our responsibility as athletes and as those who are in the spotlight to bring awareness to certain issues." Bryant: "I will be saying something to them, saying plenty to them, and hopefully we can do some things to try to prohibit violence and prohibit hate crimes and things of that nature, because it's extremely important to do that" ("The Mason & Ireland Show," ESPN Radio 710 L.A., 4/13).

Bonds Guilty Of Obstruction Of Justice; Mistrial On Perjury Counts

Former MLBer Barry Bonds yesterday was convicted of obstruction of justice for "giving evasive answers to a federal grand jury that questioned him about his use of performance-enhancing drugs." U.S. District Judge Susan Illston "declared a mistrial" on three perjury counts. Bonds "left court without saying anything." A sentencing date was not set, and Bonds remains free. He "could be sentenced to two years in prison under federal guidelines," but some legal experts said that he is "likely to receive no more than house arrest" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 4/14).

Final Jeopardy!

Last night's "Final Jeopardy!" category was "Nobel Peace Prize Winners."

"The two Middle East prime ministers of the same country who shared the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize with another leader."

Laugh Track....

CBS' David Letterman: "First of all, I know we've got visitors from out of town. I don't want to ruin your trip, but New York City is crawling with rats. Everywhere you go, rats. Everybody's upset about it. I'm not upset about it. The rats, God bless them, they're the only ones doing anything about the garbage. … They say it's deterring tourists from coming. Here's what you do. Rent a cab for the day and have him drive you around and just feed the rats through the window of the cab. Rat Country Safari. … There's a prison up the road. … It's called Sing Sing prison and it's a famous or infamous prison and they're taking the prison and they're turning it into condominiums. … So you know, that's like 8x10, and that will be like a million-dollar condo when they get done with it. And they've got the barbed wire around the top, they have guard towers. So it will be a gated community. … You know who's running for president? Donald Trump. … He wants to see Barack Obama's birth certificate, you know? I said, 'Yeah, we'll show you his birth certificate when you show us the license for that thing on your head.' … Donald Trump has got a campaign slogan. You have to have a good slogan if you're going to be president. Like Barack Obama's campaign slogan was, 'Hey, who wants some change?' And it worked. Donald Trump's campaign slogan is, 'A complex world demands complex hair.' … How about that Shirley MacLaine? She goes on 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' and she says in one day she had sex with three different guys. Madonna heard about that and she said, 'Wow, that's what I call a slump'" ("Late Show," CBS, 4/13).

NBC's Jay Leno: "President Obama introduced his new deficit reduction plan to America. The President says he wants to raise taxes on the richest Americans. You thought Donald Trump hated him before! … Actually, one part of President Obama's plan I thought was very interesting. He's calling on all Americans to have more grandchildren because the more of them there are, the easier it will be for them to pay off our $14 trillion debt. … President Obama also talked about education. At one point in his speech today, he said South Korean children are outpacing our kids in math. Hey, South Korean children are outpacing his economic team in math. … A federal jury found Barry Bonds guilty on one count. He could serve 21 months in prison. So that's the big lesson here: If you're a celebrity and you use drugs and you want to avoid prison, you better be Charlie Sheen. … Burger King is coming out with a new version of the whopper called 'The Meat Monster.' It contains two ground beef patties, two slices of cheese, three strips of bacon and a chicken breast. Their goal: To wipe out every single animal with one sandwich. … Taco Bell is now coming out with a taco shell that's made from Doritos. That's how fat we're getting in this country now, huh? Our fast food is now wrapped in junk food. … A study of 29 industrialized countries found that Mexicans work the hardest of all people, and today Walmart said, 'Shhhh! They're gonna want a raise!' And you know who works the least? Belgians, people from Belgium work the least. That's why you never see the large group of Belgians hanging around the Home Depot over here in Burbank" ("The Tonight Show," NBC, 4/13).

LATE NIGHT LAUGHS:

Prince appeared on TBS' "Lopez Tonight" last night and  told host George Lopez that he auctioned off a guitar he played in concert that was bought by F1 driver "brother Lewis Hamilton" for $100,000. Prince displayed the guitar on-stage and said, "It's going to be hard to part with this" ("Lopez Tonight," TBS, 4/13).

Last night's Top Ten list was "Top Ten Revelations by Muammar Qaddafi's Ukrainian Nurse" ("Late Show," CBS, 4/13).

10) "Can bench press a medium-sized camel."
9) "Drinks four glasses of crude oil a day."
8) "Sings in a Jimmy Buffet tribute band called 'Muammar-Garitaville.'"
7) "Had a brief, stormy marriage to Loni Anderson."
6) "Even he thinks Trump is nuts."
5) "Enjoys a good matzo ball soup."
4) "Three words: Justin Bieber tattoo."
3) "Paid entire staff in 'Qaddafi Bucks.'"
2) "Often liked to pretend he was the nurse and she was the corrupt dictator."
1) "Used the same plastic surgeon as Regis."
