Rockets Owner Interested In Buying CSN Houston Parent Company

Rockets Owner Leslie Alexander today said that he is "interested in buying all of Houston Regional Sports Network," the parent company of CSN Houston. The comments came during a "brief status conference hearing" in the CSN Houston bankruptcy case. Astros Owner Jim Crane said the "ball is in his (Alexander's) court" if he wants to make an offer. The two owners "conferred briefly outside the courtroom," and Alexander was "smiling during his brief exchange with Crane" (CHRON.com, 11/21).

MLB's Postseason Player Payout Down 4% From Record '12 Total

By Eric Fisher

MLB distributed $62.68M in postseason player compensation in '13, down 4% from last year's league-record figure. This year's total is the second-highest distribution in MLB history. The money, generated from 50% of the gate receipts of the Wild Card games, 60% of the first three games of each LDS game and the first four games of each LCS and World Series, is a largely a function of the ballpark capacities of the participating teams and ticket prices. The relatively limited seating capacities of Fenway Park, Tropicana Field and PNC Park helped limit the compensation pool somewhat.

The Red Sox divided their $22.57M portion of the pool into 58 full shares of $307,322.68 each, 14.895 partial shares and 21 cash awards. The Red Sox' full playoff share was down 17% from last year's full champion share for the Giants. As was the case last year, payouts were given to just the 10 playoff teams. In years past with the eight-team postseason format, the four regular-season clubs that finished second in their divisions but did not make the playoffs also received funds.
