MLB Giants Revise Plans For Mission Rock Development

The MLB Giants today will submit a ballot measure to the S.F. city attorney for Mission Rock, the "long-planned mixed-use development across from AT&T Park." Under a "revised scheme that city voters will have a chance to vote on in November," the 28-acre project will have "twice as much affordable housing and significantly shorter buildings." Mission Rock is to have 1,500 housing units, eight acres of parkland and 1.5 million square feet of commercial space. The changes were "in part driven by the shifting winds" of S.F. politics (S.F. CHRONICLE, 5/5).

Adidas Sees Q1 Profits Increase; ESPN Costs Hurt Disney's Results

adidas today reported an 8.2% uptick in Q1 net profit "on the improved performance of the German sporting-goods group's namesake and Reebok brands." Net profit for the period ending in March rose to $246M from $226M in the year-ago period, "slightly below analysts' expectations." Q1 sales rose 9% to $4.54B, "adjusted for currency effects." Sales in North America, "a sore spot for Adidas for many years, rose 7% on a currency-neutral basis" (WSJ.com, 5/5).

Meanwhile, Disney this morning reported quarterly earnings, with CNBC’s Julia Boorstin noting the company beat the estimates with “broadcasting showing … big growth in operating income.” But CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin noted “operating income at cable networks, including ESPN, decreased” by 9% to $1.8B for the quarter “due to a decrease at ESPN.” Sorkin: “We always say content is king, but here is what’s happening. The decrease at ESPN was driven by higher programming and production costs. It costs more and more to get the rights for these productions and you have to make up on the other end with the subscriber” (“Squawk Box,” CNBC, 5/5).

Quicken Loans Arena Credit Card System Fails During Playoff Game

Fans attending last night's Bulls-Cavaliers Game 1 at Quicken Loans Arena were "unable to purchase concessions, souvenirs or services using their credit or debit cards for a portion of the contest." Vendors were "forced to insist on cash in order to complete transactions." As the fourth quarter began, Cavaliers game management officials tweeted that the "system had been brought back online, and that fans would be able to make purchases with their credit cards for the remainder of the evening" (CLEVELAND.com, 5/4).

Sources: Cal To Make Michael Williams AD, Removing Interim Tag

Sources said that Michael Williams will be named Cal AD "after filling that role on an interim basis for nearly a year." An announcement "could come this week." Williams became interim AD in June, replacing Sandy Barbour, who held the position for 10 years before leaving for Penn State. A source said that a "contract agreement has been reached in principle." Williams "did not confirm or deny" that he has been selected for the job (SFGATE.com, 5/4).

Laugh Track....Locker Room Humor

ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel said he was in the locker room before the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight: “At one point, (trainer Freddie Roach) went somewhere and the other trainer went somewhere so it was just me and Manny sitting there. He is warming up for the biggest fight of his life. He’s getting ready and I’m standing there wearing gold chains and a stupid hat. ... Floyd Mayweather now has five title belts. Hopefully, he’ll give one of those belts to his buddy Justin Bieber so he can keep his pants up for a change. I want to thank Freddie Roach and Manny Pacquaio for letting me be a part of the team. I don’t know how much I helped the team. I wish this is the first time I brought bad luck to a team. I was also part of Lee Harvey Oswald’s entourage and we know how that turned out. There’s me with Ned Stark from the first season of ‘Game of Thrones.’ Here, you can see I am with Old Yeller. The moral of the story is don’t invite me to anything” (“Jimmy Kimmel Live,” ABC, 5/4).

NBC’s Jimmy Fallon said, “Congratulations to American Pharoah and Floyd Mayweather on their new royal baby. … On Saturday, Floyd Mayweather beat Manny Pacquiao to keep his undefeated title. That’s actually something I have in common with Floyd Mayweather. Neither one of us have ever lost a boxing match. ... Actually, a lot of people are complaining. People are like, ‘It was boring, failed to live up to the hype.’ Fans were hoping for the fight of the century. They got something slightly less dramatic than a fight on ‘Real Housewives’” (“The Tonight Show,” NBC, 5/4).

Last night’s edition of CBS’ “Late Show” featured comedian Will Ferrell performing his impersonation of late Cubs broadcaster Harry Caray. “Caray” said of Letterman’s upcoming retirement, “That’s a good call. I could tell you’re losing a little mustard off the heater” (“Late Show,” CBS, 5/4).
