FanDuel Signs Multiyear Sponsorship Deals With 15 NFL Teams

By Terry Lefton

Weeks after Disney/ESPN reached an industry-redefining advertising and equity agreement with daily fantasy site DraftKings worth hundreds of millions, rival FanDuel today will announce that it has signed exclusive multiyear sponsorships with 15 NFL teams (see chart below). Since Yahoo has an exclusive deal with the 49ers and three NFL teams are in states where paid fantasy games are illegal (Arizona, Louisiana, and Washington), that means FanDuel has 15 of the 28 eligible NFL clubs locked up.

Last Friday, the NFL released to its teams new marketing regulations governing their deals with paid fantasy sites. The new rules essentially make daily paid fantasy sites equivalent to gambling casinos in ways clubs could market with them.

NFL Owners, Officials To Hear Presentations On Planned Stadiums

Reps of competing L.A.-area venue projects today in N.Y. will "update a committee of NFL owners on their progress," now that "both would-be stadiums have local approval." The Carson City Council last night approved a privately financed Chargers/Raiders stadium by a 3-0 vote. This comes "barely two months after the public announcement" of the $1.7B project. The Inglewood City Council in February adopted a ballot initiative for its competing $1.86B stadium as part of a mixed-use development backed by Rams Owner Stan Kroenke (L.A. TIMES, 4/22).

Also presenting today in N.Y. will be St. Louis stadium consultant Dave Peacock, whose appearance before the L.A. opportunities committee and other NFL officials will mark the "first time the league will see a formal presentation on the St. Louis stadium plan" (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 4/22).

NRG Stadium Could Get Wi-Fi Capability Via $2.9M Upgrade

The Harris County (Texas) Sports & Convention Corp. plans to meet today to "take one big step forward into the digital age" by voting on a $2.9M bid to install Wi-Fi capability at NRG Stadium. The HCSCC, the stadium's landlord, will consider a bid from California-based Five Bars, which installed the wireless system at Angel Stadium. What "remains unanswered is who will foot the bill" for the upgrade. The HCSCC "essentially would push the tab onto the table for all parties, tenants and landlord, to sort out who owes what" (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 4/22).

Wisconsin Officials Meeting To Talk Funding For Bucks Arena

Bucks President Peter Feigin said that he is "hopeful about making progress on public funding" for a new arena when the team meets today with state and local government officials. The session in Madison is "closed to news media" and will be the "second such meeting in the past two weeks." It will include Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, Milwaukee County Exec Chris Abele and state Sen. Scott Fitzgerald and is expected to feature a rep of Gov. Scott Walker. Feigin "predicted a deal needs to be struck within the next two weeks" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 4/21).

Cox Subscribers In Virginia Unable To Watch Wizards Playoff Game

Cox cable subscribers in Virginia last night "found themselves presented" with an Orioles-Blue Jays game instead of Game 2 of the Wizards-Raptors NBA playoff series. The Capitals-Islanders game was "featured on Comcast SportsNet's main channel," so the Wizards were "pushed to CSN Plus." But in Virginia, CSN Plus and MASN2 "share a channel" on Cox. MASN2 was showing the MLB game, which took precedence due to a "contractual obligation." The game was "also blacked out on NBA TV in local markets" (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 4/21).

MLB Network Rolls Out Statcast Feature During Cardinals-Nationals

MLB Network's new Statcast feature was "in full force almost right away" for its debut last night in the Cardinals-Nationals game, "pushing forth revealing data in all stages of the game." Plenty of "ground was covered," with broadcasters Bob Costas, John Smoltz and Tom Verducci "dissecting the new technology" (MLB.com, 4/21). The network's use of Statcast was "judicious," but a few instances "stood out as unneeded" (N.Y. TIMES, 4/22).

Florida State Senate Revives Effort To Support Pro Sports Venues

Political backers of Florida pro sports are "mounting a drive in the waning moments of this year's session" of the state Legislature to "help out" the Jaguars, Dolphins, Orlando City SC and Daytona Int'l Speedway. A state Senate panel yesterday "tacked a provision into an economic development bill that would guarantee taxpayer money" to the track and team venues. The proposals are worth $255M in state funds to be "paid out over the next two to three decades." It is "not clear if the legislation (SB 1214) will pass by the May 1 deadline" (AP, 4/21).
