PNC To Sponsor Bears In Deal That Includes Halas Hall, Suites

The Bears today are expected to announce a naming-rights deal with PNC Bank for Halas Hall and Soldier Field suites. PNC also "will become the Bears' official and exclusive bank, succeeding Chase." Sources said that PNC will pay a total of $25-35M for five to 10 years. The agreement takes effect with the '15 season. The Pittsburgh-based bank also has "exclusive status" with the Steelers and Browns (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 4/21).

Under Armour Reports Drop In Q1 Profit Following Acquisitions

Under Armour reported a 13.4% drop in Q1 profit, "hurt by higher costs related to its recent acquisitions." This comes after UA in February "acquired two fitness tracking services, Endomondo and MapMyFitness," for about $560M. The company's net income fell to $11.7M in the quarter ending March 31, down from $13.5M in the year-ago period. Revenue rose about 25.5% to $804.9M, up from $642M in Q1 '14 (CNBC.com, 4/21).

49ers Seek Deal For Control Of Soccer Fields Near Stadium

The Santa Clara City Council today is scheduled to discuss the 49ers' proposed "long-term deal to gain control of three publicly owned soccer fields next to Levi's Stadium." The 49ers are offering more than $15M to park cars on a youth soccer park, but opponents said that "losing the fields could cripple the popular Santa Clara Youth Soccer League, and that the payment isn't enough to buy land and construct new fields." The team "also wants the right to develop the 10-acre site." A vote on the deal "may or may not come at the next meeting in two weeks" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 4/21).

Penguins Extend Sellout Streak, Overcoming Slow Playoff Sales

The Penguins yesterday morning sold out last night's first-round Stanley Cup Playoffs Game 3 against the Rangers, "extending their sellout streak" to 376 games. This after playoff ticket sales were "sluggish in the two weeks leading to the postseason." The team gave away 100 free tickets via Twitter and another 100 to an area radio station. The sellout streak began in January '08, prior to the move to Consol Energy Center (TRIBLIVE.com, 4/20).

Reds Manager Bryan Price Targets Media In Profanity-Laced Rant

Reds manager Bryan Price yesterday "went on a five-minute, 34-second expletive-filled tirade" about media coverage in his daily session with reporters ahead of an away game against the Brewers. Upset by reports about C Devin Mesoraco not traveling with the team over the weekend, Price said, "I don't know what the importance is for everyone to know if we have a player that's not here." The rant contained "77 uses of the 'F' word or a variant and 11 uses of a vulgar term for feces." Read a full transcript of the tirade (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 4/21).

Cubs-Pirates Game Paused After Woman In Stands Hit By Ball

Last night's Cubs-Pirates game at PNC Park was halted for 23 minutes in the second inning after a woman standing near the screen behind home plate was "struck in the back of the head by a foul ball and taken to a hospital." The ball "did not go through the protective netting, but struck the woman standing close to the screen in the first row of seats" (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 4/21). The Pirates in a statement said the woman was "conscious and alert" during the ambulance ride (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 4/21).

ESPN's Tim Kurkjian said, "I am amazed we don't have this more often. ... If you're ever behind the screen, don't get close enough where it can hit you through the screen. ... If you take your children to a game, you better bring a glove. You better protect them because that ball will hurt you badly if you're not paying attention. This is another example" ("Baseball Tonight," ESPN, 4/20).

Comedy Central’s Larry Wilmore talked about ESPN’s Britt McHenry and how her “abusive rant” towards a tow truck driver “went viral” resulting in her being suspended by ESPN. Wilmore said, “You get your car towed you're going to be angry. I remember one time I said to the lady at the tow place, ‘Hey! I'm angry!’ So I get it. What could she have said that's worthy of a job suspension?” The broadcast aired clips of McHenry belittling the driver, with Wilmore saying, “That uppity tow pound clerk thinks she's better than everyone else. Look at her sitting all judge-y over her junkyard kingdom. Put her in her place, pretty white lady who's used to everybody doing what she says because she's a pretty white lady!” Wilmore added the female driver did not want McHenry to be suspended, “So the woman who's being accused of being low-class actually has all the class.” Wilmore said of McHenry’s Twitter apology, “I heard Twitter accepted her apology but the lady she actually insulted is still waiting for hers” (“The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore,” Comedy Central, 4/20).
