San Jose Today Will Petition U.S. Supreme Court On MLB Lawsuit

Attorneys for the city of San Jose today plan to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to “consider the city’s claims” that MLB violated federal antitrust laws. The city will urge the Supreme Court to “review a federal appeals court’s decision in January rejecting the city’s claims that baseball’s refusal to allow the A’s to move to a downtown ballpark violates antitrust provisions” (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 4/15).

Dodgers Hosting Civil Rights Game As Part Of Jackie Robinson Day

MLB today is celebrating Jackie Robinson Day with tributes including players wearing the No. 42 and the Dodgers hosting the Mariners in the Civil Rights Game. The game, now in its ninth season, was “moved up this year to coincide with Jackie Robinson Day, given the team hosting it.” Dodgers investor Magic Johnson and civil rights activist Dolores Huerta will be honored with Beacon Awards at the annual luncheon before the game. A roundtable discussion about baseball and civil rights will also be held, with Robinson’s daughter, Sharon Robinson, being “an important part of the panel discussion” (MLB.com, 4/14).

Liberty Mutual Insurance To Sponsor U.S. Soccer Federation Through '18

Liberty Mutual Insurance today announced a sponsorship agreement with the U.S. Soccer Federation through '18. The deal designates Liberty Mutual as the Official Insurance Partner of the U.S. men's and women's national teams, as well as the Youth National Teams and the U.S. Soccer Development Academy. The deal kicks off tonight at the Alamodome during the Mexico-U.S. men's friendly. Liberty Mutual will have branding throughout the venue, including an experiential footprint. The deal with the USSF complements Liberty Mutual's deals with the USOC, ASA/USA Softball, U.S. Ski & Snowboard Association, USA Hockey, USA Volleyball, USA Water Polo, USA Wrestling and USRowing. SUM facilitated the Liberty-USSF deal (Liberty Mutual).

PGA Tour Today Announcing Addition Of Web.com Tour Event In Dallas

The Web.com Tour is adding another event to its '15 schedule, as the Greater Dallas Open will be played June 1-7 at The Lakes at Castle Hills in suburban Lewisville, Texas. The event will fall as the 11th tournament on the tour's 25-event schedule. There is no title sponsor yet for the tournament, with the event to be run as a partnership between the Northern Texas PGA Section and The Lakes at Castle Hills. The PGA Tour will officially announce the tournament later today.

Golf Industry Execs Hitting Capitol Hill As Part Of National Golf Day

Golf industry execs today are taking part in National Golf Day, which “provides a chance for golf’s leading organizations to converge” on DC. The golf industry coalition known as We Are Golf will “educate government officials on the game’s strengths” and “highlight the estimated $70 billion economic impact” the sport has on 15,000 businesses. Presidents Cup captains Jay Haas and Nick Price are taking part in today’s events (GOLFDIGESTSTIX.com, 4/15).

Matt Harvey Helps Mets Sell Tickets For Second Home Game Of Season

The Mets last night hosted their second home game of the season and tapped P Matt Harvey to make his first start at Citi Field in more than a year. The game drew 39,849, a 9.3% drop from the capacity crowd for Monday’s opener. The decline between Game 1 and Game 2 crowds was “much less compared with recent years” (NEWSDAY, 4/15). It was “a late-arriving crowd,” but fans “made themselves heard loud and clear with ‘Har-vey!’ and ‘Let’s go Harvey!’ chants in the first inning” (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 4/15).

Athletes Propose New Settlement In Concussion Suit Against NCAA

Filings last night notified U.S. District Court Judge John Lee that “there was a new proposed settlement for a head injury lawsuit against the NCAA brought” by student-athletes. Lee rejected the initial settlement in December and it is “likely to be weeks before they know for sure whether this agreement pleases Lee more than the first.” The core of the new agreement is “the same as the one” Lee previously rejected and “no new blockbuster terms appear in the new deal” (AP, 4/14).

NFL Exec VP/Business Ventures Eric Grubman today "will meet with officials from the City of Oakland and Alameda County" regarding the "status of an East Bay stadium proposal for the Raiders" (CSNBAYAREA.com, 4/14).

The new owners of the Triple-A Int'l League Pawtucket Red Sox today are expected to announce "what financial help they're seeking from Rhode Island taxpayers and what their consultants have learned about the possibility of building a new ballpark" in Providence (PROVIDENCE JOURNAL, 4/14).

The Nevada Athletic Commission is "asking state lawmakers to increase taxes on tickets" to boxing and MMA events. The bill would raise fees on ticket sales from 6% to 8% and "would allow the governor to appoint the head" of the NAC (AP, 4/14).

The 11:00pm edition of FS1’s “Fox Sports Live” also led with Phillies-Mets, but followed with and Tigers-Pirates and Champions League highlights of Real Madrid-Atlético Madrid and AS Monaco-Juventus.

ESPN’s Jeremy Schaap filled in for ESPN’s Keith Olbermann last night and did not air a "world’s worst persons in sports" segment.
