Orioles Home Game Postponed Amid Violence, Rioting In Area

Last night's White Sox-Orioles game at Camden Yards was postponed "because of escalating unrest stemming from the death of Freddie Gray," and now the entire homestand is "in doubt." As of late last night, "no decision had been made" regarding today's game. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred "suggested the Orioles could play games elsewhere" and added that Nationals Park "could be an option." The club "strongly prefers" to play the games in Baltimore. Manfred said that the "decision to postpone the game was made to ensure everyone's safety" (Baltimore SUN, 4/28).

Manfred, who happened to be at Camden Yards yesterday for the game, said Orioles Owner Peter Angelos “had been in contact with all the relevant local officials.” By the time the two talked, it “was very clear to me that the only available option to us in terms of protecting the players, obviously, the umpires, our fans, was to postpone the game tonight” (“Baseball Tonight,” ESPN, 4/27).

Sportservice Ousts Centerplate As Qualcomm Stadium Concessionaire

The San Diego City Council yesterday approved a new five-year concession agreement for Qualcomm Stadium with Delaware North Sportservice, "despite some members raising concerns about how the potential departure of the Chargers might affect the deal." Sportservice, which also handles concessions at Petco Park, replaces longtime Qualcomm concessionaire Centerplate. It was chosen over "two other potential vendors" as well (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 4/28).

Conference Commissioners Gather To Review First Year Of CFP

The 10 FBS commissioners and Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick today will convene in Dallas to "review the first season" of the CFP, and it is "unlikely there will be any major changes." Members of the CFP selection committee "will not be there," but officials will hear a report from committee Chair Jeff Long. The agenda includes "money matters" and meetings with media partners and sponsors, "and they will discuss the bowl experience for the players." Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby said that they "will also discuss the 'ongoing challenges'" of ticketing (ESPN.com, 4/27).

Bowlsby is "likely to seek clarification about how the lack of a conference championship game will impact his schools" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 4/28). There could be "deliberations about fine-tuning" selection (FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 4/28).

NFL Draft Prospects To Attend Domestic Violence Education Program

The NFL Draft begins Thursday, and the 28 prospects attending the event in Chicago "will go through mandatory domestic violence and sexual assault education" today. The players will receive the "same 45-minute program" that all NFL employees received last season. This is the "first time this sort of program has been mandatory prior to the draft." Prospects not attending "will receive the same seminar" at June's rookie symposium. All NFL players will go through an "updated education program this fall" (USA TODAY, 4/28).
