NFL Opposes Players' Deposition Request In Prescription Drug Case

By Daniel Kaplan

The NFL is objecting to what it calls "harassing" deposition demands of Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones and Colts Owner Jim Irsay made by former players suing the NFL over prescription drug use. In a letter today to the federal judge overseeing the case, NFL outside counsel Covington & Burling wrote, “That Plaintiffs would seek, for example, to leverage Mr. Irsay’s personal struggle with pain medication to justify a deposition is improper regardless of his level of seniority.” The letter stated the former players wanted to depose Jones because “he has made public statements in 2016 regarding the injury status of quarterback Tony Romo and other current Cowboys players.”

The former players’ lawsuit alleges they were improperly prescribed medication for their injuries by team trainers and doctors. The NFL asked Judge William Alsup to deny the deposition requests or delay them until less intrusive discovery had been completed. The case, Evans et al v Arizona Cardinals Football Club, LLC et al, is being heard in federal district court in Northern California.

Former Relativity Execs Walters, Swartz Launch Catalyst Sports & Media

Former Relativity Sports execs Happy Walters and Josh Swartz today formally announced the launch of Catalyst Sports & Media, positioned as a strategic advisor, investor and talent rep with a focus on basketball, international soccer and e-sports. Novo Construction CEO Jim Fowler is "backing the new agency." Walters, who has about a dozen NBA clients, indicated that Catalyst is in "discussions about European acquisitions in the soccer business." He said he and Swartz both believe e-sports is "going to be a major part of the landscape of sports" (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 11/7 issue).

Falcons Sign GM Dimitroff To Three-Year Extension Through '19

The Falcons today signed GM Thomas Dimitroff to a three-year contract extension through '19 (Falcons). Financial terms were not disclosed. The Falcons "never had consecutive winning records before Dimitroff joined the team" in '08. They were "above .500 in his first five seasons and made the playoffs four times" (AP, 11/7). Dimitroff's body of work has "surpassed anything any Falcons’ general manager had accomplished in history" (MYAJC.com, 11/7).
