Cubs Holding Championship Parade, Rally Tomorrow In Chicago

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel today announced that the Cubs' World Series championship parade will be held tomorrow. The celebration will culminate with a rally in Grant Park "expected to dwarf the ones" held for the Bulls' titles during the '90s and the "more recent celebrations" for the Blackhawks. Emanuel said that the parade route is "still coming together." The Chicago Public Schools district "already has scheduled a day off on Friday" (CHICAGO.SUNTIMES.com, 11/3).

WGN America will air complete, commercial-free coverage of the parade from Tribune Broadcasting's local Chicago station, WGN-TV (WGN).

Topps Signs Cubs' Bryant To Company's Largest Baseball Card Deal

Topps today announced that it has signed Cubs 3B Kris Bryant to the "largest baseball trading card deal in company history," placing Bryant's autograph cards in Topps and Bowman products beginning in '17. He also will "grace the covers of Topps BUNT, MLB's official licensed trading card app, and next year's Baseball Series 1 pack." Financial terms of the multiyear deal were not disclosed (CHICAGOTRIBUNE.com, 11/3).

Meanwhile, Red Bull via social media last night released a cartoon ad starring Bryant, the beverage brand's first with a U.S. athlete (THE DAILY).

Attorney in Concussion Appeal: Turner's CTE Diagnosis A "Bombshell"

By Daniel Kaplan

The lead attorney for one of two Supreme Court appeals of the NFL concussion settlement, Deepak Gupta, described news that the late Kevin Turner had CTE and not ALS as a "bombshell" that "thoroughly undercuts what little legitimacy this settlement had." Turner, the named plaintiff in the settlement for those suffering from injuries, had long been diagnosed with ALS until his death earlier this year. ALS is covered under the settlement.

The Boston Univ. Brain CTE Center today announced after an examination of Turner’s brain, he had CTE and not ALS. CTE currently can only be diagnosed post mortem, and it is not covered under the settlement other than for those who were diagnosed with having it prior to the district court approval. “The one thing the settlement had going for it was that it delivered compensation to a player suffering present injury – people with a 'qualifying diagnosis,'” Gupta said. "This means that the one person put forward as a representative for all the players with present injuries isn't even in that category."

Gupta: “Like Ken Stabler, it turns out that Kevin Turner is actually in the group that this settlement leaves out in the cold – players who die with a CTE diagnosis after the settlement. If the settlement doesn't even serve one of the two named representatives, what confidence can anyone have that this is a fair deal?”

Sources: MLB Rangers Look To Sell $1B In Bonds Backed By TV Deal

Sources said that the MLB Rangers are "looking to sell" at least $1B in bonds "backed by their television contract" with FS Southwest. The network agreed to pay the team about $1.6B over 20 years. The club is reportedly "working with Citigroup Inc. and Morgan Stanley to raise money against that contract." One source said that FS Southwest is "aware of the team's attempt to raise money but isn't involved in the financing" (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 11/3).

Twins Name Thad Levine GM Now That World Series Is Over

The Twins today named Thad Levine Senior VP & GM, reporting to Exec VP & Chief Baseball Officer Derek Falvey. Levine, who has served as Rangers Assistant GM since '05, will be formally introduced Monday. In his previous role, Levine helped Rangers President of Baseball Operations & GM Jon Daniels with "player acquisitions, contract negotiations, roster management, statistical analysis and was also in charge of their international scouting department." The Twins "had to wait for an unforgettable World Series" to conclude before announcing the move, and Falvey remained in his role as Indians Assistant GM "until the conclusion of the Fall Classic" (MLB.com, 11/3).

Throwback Thursday: Sock The Vote

Schilling campaigns with Bush in Ohio before the '04 election
Twelve years ago this week, Red Sox P Curt Schilling, fresh off of his “Bloody Sock” performance against the Yankees and a curse-snapping World Series victory, did some last-minute campaigning for President George W. Bush in his bid for re-election. On a robocall, Schilling told potential voters, “Sox fans all throughout New England trusted me when it was my turn on the mound. Now you can trust me on this: President Bush is the right leader for our country.” His endorsement flew in the face of the Red Sox front office, as Owner John Henry, Chair Tom Werner and GM Theo Epstein all appeared with Democratic challenger John Kerry at a rally in New Hampshire. Bush, of course, would go on to secure a second term.
