NBA, Union Nearing Deal To Extend CBA By Seven Years

Sources said that the NBA and NBPA are "working on a seven-year extension" to the CBA, with a "mutual opt-out in six years." The deal "could potentially deliver the NBA labor peace" through the '23-24 season. Sources added that the NBA and the union "have agreed upon the major issues of the deal, and are finishing negotiations on smaller provisions" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 10/24).

NBA Renews Partnership With Kumho Tire, Expands New Era Deal

The NBA is renewing several partners before the regular season gets underway. The league today announced a multiyear extension of its marketing deal with Kumho Tire in the U.S., Canada and Korea. The relationship began in '14, when Kumho became the first tire partner of the NBA and NBA D-League. The tire brand will activate in '16-17 with a new "Handles" platform, tying on-court ball handling to its product's functionality on the road. Kumho will continue as presenting sponsor of the D-League All-Star Game.

Also today, the NBA announced an expansion of its licensing deal with New Era, which now becomes the official authentic headwear provider of the NBA, WNBA and D-League (THE DAILY).

National and local marketing initiatives throughout the season will include in-store and event activations, plus TV, digital and social media elements. San Diego State Names Wicker New AD, Replacing Sterk

San Diego State Univ. today named John David Wicker its new AD, replacing Jim Sterk. Wicker was a "longtime lieutenant" to Sterk, who left in August for the Univ. of Missouri. Wicker "worked under Sterk at Washington State, then followed him to SDSU before leaving for a similar associate AD position at Georgia Tech" in '15. He has "vast experience running an athletic department and handling budgets at a state university, and less in the area of fund-raising." Wicker was one of three finalists along with Oregon State's Mark Massari and UCLA's Josh Rebholz (SANDIEGOUNIONTRIBUNE.com, 10/24).

Cubs Forced To Pull World Series Ticket Offer For City Aldermen

The Cubs have "pulled the lucrative offer to let aldermen purchase World Series tickets at face value." The "about-face comes three days after the city’s Board of Ethics issued new rules that made it more difficult for aldermen who preside over all things Wrigley Field to take advantage of the ticket offer." The ethics ordinance "prohibits city employees and elected officials from accepting gifts worth more than $50." The board said that the difference between the face value of Cubs playoff tickets and the “'commonly understood fair market value' exceeds that $50 limit" (CHICAGO.SUNTIMES.com, 10/24).
