Out-Of-Home Numbers Swell Fox' Super Bowl Viewership

By John Ourand

This month’s Super Bowl attracted 113.426 million viewers to Fox when out-of-home measurements were factored in, according to Nielsen. The out-of-home number is 12.98 million, leading to a total viewership figure that is 13% higher than Fox' final number for in-home alone and 3% higher than last year’s Super Bowl with out-of-home, Fox execs said. The numbers are even gaudier in the younger demos: when out-of-home ratings are included, Fox saw a 19% lift in the 18-34 demo, Fox Sports Exec VP and Head of Strategy & Analytics Mike Mulvihill said. “For a lot of years, we’ve been talking about how to capture the younger audience and meet them on their terms,” Mulvihill said. “The out-of-home measurement goes a long way to meeting them on their terms.”

As part of Nielsen’s final ratings, the Super Bowl eclipsed the 100-million-viewer mark on Fox, averaging 100.446 million, higher than the 99.869 million viewers Nielsen reported the day after the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl’s 13% out-of-home lift was similar to Fox’ 12% Sunday afternoon regular-season out-of-home increase, Mulvihill said. “For as much as this is the social event of the sports year, we really didn’t find the out-of-home impact to be much different from what we’re going to be selling every week next season.”

For the next regular season, TV networks will be selling advertising based on out-of-home ratings, which will be fully integrated into the national ratings and available the day after a game. “This number that we saw for Super Bowl LIV suggests that once the out-of-home gets fully incorporated, we’re not far off from getting to that 120 million level,” Mulvihill said. Out-of-home ratings essentially count the number of people that can hear television audio anywhere outside their own residence -- from bars and restaurants to friends' homes and airport waiting areas. “There are 100 places where we might encounter TV content just going about our day-to-day lives,” Mulvihill said. “Out-of-home is designed to capture all of that.”

Sources: World Wide Wes No Longer Expected To Join Knicks

CAA consultant William Wesley is "no longer expected to join" the Knicks in "any formal capacity," according to sources. This comes after the Knicks held internal discussions about the "possibility of 'World Wide Wes' joining the franchise in a front office role" alongside agent Leon Rose, who is set to become President of Basketball Operations. Wesley has worked in "multiple ventures and in the shadows of the industry for years," and he has had a "longstanding partnership with Rose." It is believed that Wesley's "other business ventures make a formal title" with the Knicks "unlikely" (THEATHLETIC.com, 2/11).

Astros' Jim Crane To Talk PR Strategy With Team Amid Scandal

Astros Owner Jim Crane today is expected to meet with the full roster to "discuss the team's strategy for publicly addressing the sign-stealing scandal." Sources said that while "only pitchers and catchers were expected to report to Astros camp" today for Spring Training in West Palm Beach, position players have flown in as well to "participate in the meeting." The franchise plans to open the clubhouse tomorrow for its "first media availability of the spring." The "level of contrition and tack the Astros will take in addressing the scandal is unclear" (ESPN.com, 2/11).

T'Wolves Offer New Season-Ticket Deals After Wiggins Trade

By John Lombardo

The T'Wolves rolled out a new '20-21 season-ticket plan that will include a 50% discount on all food, beverage (including alcohol) and merchandise bought through the team’s app. This comes on the heels of last week's blockbuster trade that sent F Andrew Wiggins to the Warriors for G D’Angelo Russell. In addition, the team is offering two years of flat pricing locked in at current season-ticket rates, plus unlimited flexibility for ticket exchanges. The deal, never offered before by the T'Wolves, looks to drive sales and interest around a squad near the bottom of the NBA Western Conference standings.

T'Wolves CEO Ethan Casson said, "We were working behind closed doors over the last few months and bouncing ideas off the league and then we came to this intersection with the huge trade. We are at a jumping off point for our fans, who frankly have been through a roller coaster for a long time. It is our way of re-igniting the market of who we are. We needed to showcase more value."

Blues' Bouwmeester Suffers Cardiac Incident, Postponing Game

Blues D Jay Bouwmeester was "conscious and alert in an Orange, Calif., hospital after suffering a cardiac incident and collapsing as he sat on the bench" during the first period of last night's game against the Ducks in Anaheim. The game was postponed with 7:50 to go in the first period, tied at 1-1. It will be "made up at a later date." This was during the Blues' "annual Dads Trip, so Bouwmeester's father, Dan, was on hand and accompanied his son to the hospital." The 36-year-old Bouwmeester is the "oldest member" of the team (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 2/12).

President Trump Likely Planning To Attend Daytona 500

By Adam Stern

President Trump appears to be planning to attend this Sunday's Daytona 500 in what would be the first time a sitting president has attended the event since '04. In an election year, Trump has attended several recent sporting events, including Army-Navy, the World Series and CFP championship. But his attendance at the 500 would still be notable and closely watched, and it would be sure to add significant logistical and security issues to the weekend. Other presidents to have attended the race are George W. Bush, George H.W. Bush and Ronald Reagan. Vice President Pence attended the Indianapolis 500 in '17.
