McLaren Exec Apologizes To Alonso, Sponsors After Indy 500 Bust

McLaren Sporting Dir Gil de Ferran "apologised to Fernando Alonso" after the driver's "shock failure to qualify" for the Indianapolis 500. This year's entry was "seen as a precursor to a full IndyCar season" in '20 for the racing team. But instead, De Ferran "spent Sunday evening saying sorry to everyone involved in the project," including the full Indy 500 team and its sponsors. McLaren "confirmed it will not seek to buy another team's entry on the grid in order to get Alonso a place in the race, an option that is open to anyone who fails to qualify" (ESPN.com, 5/20).

Pac-12 Presidents Eye Strategic Partner At Spring Meeting

Pac-12 presidents and chancellors today hold their annual spring meeting in S.F., where they will "assuredly discuss the search for a strategic partner" for the conference. Another expected items on the agenda is the "unveiling of minimum standards for non-conference basketball schedules." Among items "unlikely to be resolved" today: The Sibson Group’s audit of football officiating is "expected to last into the summer, and the key football postseason matters -- the future location of the Pac-12 championship game and the bowl partnerships for 2020 and beyond -- probably won’t be finalized for months" (MERCURYNEWS.com, 5/17).
