AGA's New Code For Sportsbooks Includes No Campus Ads

By Bill King

Leading sportsbooks including MGM Resorts, William Hill, DraftKings and FanDuel have agreed not to advertise sports betting on college campuses and will tag their ads with responsible gaming messages as part of a sports wagering marketing code announced today by the American Gaming Association. This comes on the first anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision that opened the door for states to authorize and regulate sports betting.

Seven states have joined Nevada in allowing legal sports betting in that time, while three other states and DC have passed legislation or referenda and are expected to begin operating by year’s end. Research firm GamblingCompliance yesterday predicted sports betting will spread to 34 states and generate $5.7B in annual gross gambling revenue by '24.

ESPN-Caesars Deal Includes Branded Las Vegas Studio

By John Ourand

Disney is dipping another toe in the sports gambling space, committing to build an ESPN-branded studio on the Las Vegas Strip at some point next year. The studio is part of a wide-ranging deal with Caesars that will be announced at Disney’s advertising upfront presentation today. It comes one week after Disney Chair & CEO Bob Iger told investors that his company would not be involved in the business of sports gambling, but would continue to produce sports gambling-related programming and sell sports gambling-related advertising. The deal also comes three months after Turner Sports signed a similar deal to build a Bleacher Report-branded studio inside the Caesars Palace sportsbook.

Specific financials about the Caesars deal weren’t given. The ESPN-branded studio will be built above The Book at LINQ Hotel & Casino. ESPN has committed to produce a still-to-be-formed weekly show from the studio that will be available via either a linear channel, ESPN+ or one of ESPN’s social media outlets. The network also plans to produce daily segments for its “Daily Wager” show, plus gambling-related content around bigger sporting events. As part of the deal, Caesars will be the official Odds Data Supplier across all ESPN platforms and ESPN will cite Caesars odds across all of its platforms. Caesars also has an undetermined number of ad commitments through the deal. ESPN VP/Business Development Mike Morrison and Caesars Exec VP & CMO Chris Holdren negotiated the deal.

RingCentral To Acquire Naming Rights To Oakland Coliseum

Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum will soon become RingCentral Coliseum, as the California-based business communications provider is buying the naming rights and will pay $1M a year for the "next three years, with an option for a fourth year." If the stadium authority approves the deal in a Friday vote, the "name change would go into effect immediately." The last company to hold the naming rights to the venue was Overstock.com -- or O.co -- which pulled out of its $1.45M-a-year deal after the Raiders announced plans in '16 to leave for Las Vegas (S.F. CHRONICLE, 5/14).

Meanwhile, the Port of Oakland has "cleared the bases" for the A's to "possibly build a 35,000-seat ballpark on its Howard Terminal site." The port's Board of Commissioners "unanimously approved an exclusive negotiating term sheet that would give the A's four years to obtain land use permits, conduct an environmental review and do other preparatory work needed to eventually lease" the 50-acre site (BAY AREA NEWS GROUP, 5/13).

The T'Wolves and Lynx have signed a multiyear sponsorship deal with health engagement platform Sharecare and with insurer Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Minnesota. The deal makes Atlanta-based Sharecare the official wellbeing partner of the NBA and WNBA teams. In addition, it puts the company logo on the Lynx' jersey, starting with their May 25 regular-season opener against the Sky. In other aspects of the deal, T'Wolves and Lynx staff will be eligible for coverage through Blue Cross & Blue Shield, while Sharecare and Blue Cross will have atrium branding at Target Center. The Lynx also have patch agreements with the Mayo Clinic and AT&T. Sharecare has an existing jersey patch deal with the Hawks.

Phillies Pay Heartfelt Tribute To Late Chair David Montgomery

The Phillies last night honored David Montgomery during their game against the Brewers, the first home contest since he died on May 8, and every fan in attendance "received a scorecard with Montgomery on the front page." The Phillies remembered their late Chair by "chalking his signature on the grass in foul territory, raising a flag with his initials -- DPM -- above Ashburn Alley, and sewing a patch with his initials onto the right sleeve of their uniforms." The team "will wear the patch for the entire season." A tribute video ended with a "shot of Montgomery’s seat at Citizens Bank Park," which was left empty for the evening (PHILLY.com, 5/13).

Yankees Postpone Home Game Against Orioles Due To Wet Field

Last night's Orioles-Yankees game was called after the Yankee Stadium field "didn't drain as well as hoped, leaving a significant amount of water in shallow left field." It will be made up as the "first game of a single-admission doubleheader" tomorrow. The Yankees are trying to determine whether the field condition was the "result of the heavy rain over the previous two days or if there was a problem with the drainage system" (N.Y. POST, 5/13). The scheduled start time was 6:35pm ET; the game was called at 8:48pm. With a "lousy forecast providing only a tiny window," the Yankees "never should have tried to play this game" (N.Y. POST, 5/13).

Kraft Scores Victory With Video Evidence Suppressed In Spa Case

Robert Kraft yesterday scored a "resounding victory" in Florida county court as a judge ruled that prosecutors cannot use secretly recorded video evidence in the Orchids of Asia Day Spa case (N.Y. TIMES, 5/14). Kraft's attorneys as soon as today are "expected to file a motion to dismiss the case based on lack of evidence." Prosecutors have the "options of appealing the decision, dismissing the charges or going ahead to trial without the only evidence they've presented" (ESPN.com, 5/13).

Regardless of the outcome of the criminal case, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell still "has the legal authority to punish Kraft" (SI.com, 5/13).

Morning Hot Reads: Swing Oil

GOLFCHANNEl.com writes under the header, "CBD Gaining In Popularity On Tour, But Not Without Concern." As a growing list of PGA Tour players who "endorse the use of CBD products suggests, the benefits, either real or perceived, are difficult to ignore." The rule in anti-doping circles is to "always tread carefully, but the Tour’s decision to lean into the discussion about CBD use is more than simply an over-abundance of caution."

Laugh Track: Brotherly Love

CBS’ James Corden said the Warriors playing the Trail Blazers in the Western Conference Finals “means Steph Curry will play against his brother Seth." Corden: "It's great news for NBA fans, terrible news for anyone with a lisp. Imagine how specific the trash talk is going to get on the court during that game. One of them goes to shoot a free throw and the other one is like, ‘You Peed your pants in the coatroom at church!’" (“The Late Late Show,” CBS, 5/13).

NBC’s Seth Meyers touched on Rick Reilly's recent book, “Commander In Cheat," dealing with President Trump's golf game, Meyers: "That book came out last month, which means it came out the same month as the Mueller Report. ... This guy cheats so much, he had two separate books about cheating come out in the same month. Soon, it's going to be its own section at Barnes & Noble. There'll be ‘Cheating at Marriage,’ there'll be, ‘Cheating at School.’" Meyers said Trump even "tried to cheat against Tiger Woods." Meyers: "That's like challenging LeBron James to a slam dunk contest and bringing a ladder” (“Late Night,” NBC, 5/13).

CBS’ Stephen Colbert said Russia President Vladimir Putin, the “man who puts the ‘death’ in sudden-death overtime,” played in an “annual exhibition hockey game in Sochi, and he reportedly scored eight goals." Colbert: "No surprise, he has an incredible slap-shot where, if you don't let him score, you are slapped and then shot.” The broadcast then aired footage from the exhibition game, with Colbert saying, “Putin collects the puck, and the defender suddenly remembers he has a family! The goalie switches teams in a stunning upset! He scores!” (“The Late Show,” CBS, 5/13).
