Ohio State Suspends AD Smith, Coach Meyer After Investigation

Ohio State trustees yesterday determined that football coach Urban Meyer and AD Gene Smith “erred in their handling” of domestic abuse allegations against former assistant coach Zach Smith “sufficiently to warrant suspensions.” The announcement came after trustees met for 10 hours yesterday. Gene Smith will be "suspended without pay" from Aug. 31-Sept. 16, while Meyer's suspension will be through Sept. 2, "and for the games of Sept. 8 and 15." The AD "apologized for not doing more." The BOT's investigative committee "interviewed more than 40 witnesses, some multiple times." It also "reviewed more than 60,000 emails and 10,000 text messages" (COLUMBUS DISPATCH, 8/23).

This morning’s editions of ABC’s “GMA,” NBC’s “Today,” “CBS This Morning” and ESPN’s “Get Up!” all aired reports on the Ohio State suspensions. NBC, CBS and ESPN all teased the story in their opening segment, with NBC airing the headline “Sidelined” and ESPN using “Urban Meyer Suspended” as their headline. “Get Up!” offered the most extensive coverage, leading their broadcast and discussing the issue for the first 15 minutes of the show. NBC aired the Meyer report as the second story of the broadcast, with ABC and CBS both airing reports 30 minutes into their broadcasts (THE DAILY).

Texas Motor Speedway Renews With IndyCar Through '22

By Adam Stern

Texas Motor Speedway this morning announced a four-year renewal with IndyCar that will see the open-wheel series remain at the SMI-owned track through ’22. TMS and IndyCar have been working through a renewal for a couple months. It is believed that TMS got its sanction fee lowered under the new terms, while IndyCar got to remove the year-round territorial exclusivity clause. That clause was a sticking point for IndyCar, as it is eyeing an additional race in Texas either at COTA or for a street race in San Antonio.

TMS President Eddie Gossage said he was content with the deal terms, adding, “I never doubted we would extend -- that’s what I said all along. Reasonable people come to reasonable conclusions.” Gossage said once he realized IndyCar was intent on removing the exclusivity clause, the key for him was to protect his track financially to the proper extent, which he added he was able to do. TMS has been hosting IndyCar races for 22 straight years.

FSU BOT Chair Ed Burr said that a "firm timetable hasn't been set" for hiring an AD. Burr did say that FSU President John Thrasher is "likely to move 'as soon as possible'" (JACKSONVILLE.com, 8/22).
