Eagles' Jenkins, Bennett Stay Off Field While Anthem Plays

Eagles S Malcolm Jenkins and CB De'Vante Bausby last night "stayed in the tunnel" during the national anthem prior to a preseason game against the Patriots at Gillette Stadium. They then "sprinted to the bench after the anthem finished." Eagles DE Michael Bennett, who "apparently stayed in the locker room for the anthem, walked out slowly a few minutes later." This after Jenkins last week "went back to the raised-fist protest," joined by Bausby. Jenkins said that he "wants the message to be about racial inequality, and not about 'whether or not the football field is the right place and time to (protest)'" (PHILLY.com, 8/16).

Jenkins "wore a black shirt with the phrase 'You aren't listening' as he walked" onto the field during warmups (USA TODAY, 8/17).

Maryland Regents Meet Today In Wake Of Jordan McNair's Death

The University System of Maryland’s Board of Regents is holding a special meeting today to "discuss actions taken by the state’s flagship university after the death of football player Jordan McNair." The regents are "expected to meet in closed session to hear updates on the university’s response to the 19-year-old offensive lineman’s death and to discuss legal and personnel issues" (BALTIMORE SUN, 8/17).

Also today, Univ. of New Mexico regents will "consider and act on a proposal to cut men's soccer, men's and women's skiing, women's beach volleyball" and diving from the UNM athletics department. This follows "weeks of criticism from the public and, more recently, New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas, regarding how the regents conducted a similar meeting on July 19" (ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL, 8/15).

Future Breeders' Cup Host Tracks To Be Formally Unveiled

Breeders' Cup sites for the next three years will be unveiled today in a "series of orchestrated news announcements at each of the three tracks." Santa Anita, host of the '19 event, "will make its announcement in the morning," while '20 host Keeneland and '21 host Del Mar will make their announcements in "mid-afternoon." Breeders’ Cup President & CEO Craig Fravel "will be at Santa Anita and Del Mar." This year's event is at Churchill Downs in November (LATIMES.com, 8/16).

A second Breeders' Cup at Del Mar "became an attractive proposition with the success of the event last November." Horsemen and fans "raved about an experience that was unlike any other in the previous 33 years of the Breeders' Cup" and which led to "betting in record amounts" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 8/16).

Nashville Body Delays Awarding Contract To Build MLS Stadium

The Nashville Sports Authority BOD yesterday voted 5-3 to "delay awarding a lucrative contract to build" a proposed MLS stadium, amid "protests from two other bidders." Mayor David Briley's administration "had recommended" that the joint firm of Mortenson/Messer Construction receive a $167.5M contract. The joint venture "received the highest score among four finalists for the contract according to a rubric as part of the city's bidding process." But one of the other finalists, Barton Malow, "has protested the scoring," and another joint firm, Skanska/AECOM Hunt, is "contemplating doing the same." The item "will be reconsidered next month" (Nashville TENNESSEAN, 8/17).

Meanwhile, Cincinnati's City Planning Commission today will "consider the proposed sale" of about two-and-a-half acres of city-owned property in the West End to MLS-bound FC Cincinnati to "help facilitate construction of a new soccer stadium." This comes as activists are "vigorously protesting" the sale of the parcel of land near Stargel Stadium (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 8/17).

Nationals Adding Bullpen Cart For Remaining Home Games

The Nationals will unveil the WGL Energy Bullpen Cart tonight against the Marlins, and the cart "will be at all remaining home games at Nationals Park." Players are "not required to use the vehicle if they do not want to." The Nats become the "third active team to have a bullpen cart," joining the D-backs and Tigers (NBCSPORTSWASHINGTON.com, 8/16). Nationals P Sean Doolittle in May "took the D-backs' bullpen cart for a spin, which helped inspire the Nationals" (MLB.com, 8/16).

City officials "remain quiet about the matter and are not confirming or denying that a PawSox-related announcement will be made." It was "nearly one year ago to the day when the City Council overwhelmingly approved a resolution in support of local efforts to woo the PawSox to Worcester" (Worcester TELEGRAM, 8/17).

Laugh Track: Taking Her Talents To Hollywood

CBS’ Stephen Colbert said there are “signs Melania is distancing herself from Trump." Colbert: "This month, after the president implied LeBron James was stupid on Twitter, the First Lady put out a statement that seemed to support LeBron and even offered to visit his school for at-risk children. Well no surprise, she’s got to find a place for Don Jr. If that kid does not straighten up, he could end up in jail.” Colbert then spoke with “First Lady Melania Trump,” played by actress Laura Benanti, about her relationship with the president. Colbert asked, “What about when he recently attacked LeBron James on Twitter? You put out a statement that supported LeBron.” Melania said, “Yes, this is true. LeBron is inspiring.” Colbert: “Because he opened a school for at-risk kids?” Melania: “What? No. I don't care about that at all. No. It’s because LeBron shows that it's never too late to leave home and sign with another team. I'm going to the Lakers, baby!” (“The Late Show,” CBS, 8/16).
