Stan Kroenke Reaches Deal To Buy Remaining Arsenal Shares

Arsenal Owner Stan Kroenke has "struck a deal" to take the EPL club private by "buying out Russian rival and minority investor Alisher Usmanov" in a move that values the team at about $2.3B. This "brings an end to the standoff between the two tycoons, who had both battled for control." The Arsenal Supporters’ Trust and one independent shareholder "condemned the move, saying it would allow Kroenke to run the business with no oversight and to add debt to the balance sheet." The bid by Kroenke, who currently owns 67% of the club's shares, "will be part funded" by a $722M loan from Deutsche Bank (REUTERS, 8/7).

San Diego State Football Gets New Lease At SDCCU Stadium

The city of San Diego yesterday approved a two-year lease for San Diego State Univ. to "continue use of SDCCU Stadium, meaning the college has secured a home for Aztecs football games" in '19 and '20. SDSU’s lease was "set to expire" at the end of '18. The school previously had "agreed to an annual rent increase" from $1 a ticket to a flat fee of $1.1M "plus concession and parking revenue for seven Aztecs games." The new terms amount to a net annual revenue gain of $1.7M "based on last year’s figures." School officials yesterday recommitted their "intention to help book additional revenue-generating concerts and events for SDCCU Stadium and the surrounding parking lot" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 8/7).

Mary Jo White To Lead Investigation Into Urban Meyer

White recently led the NFL's investigation into former Panthers Owner Jerry Richardson (AKRON BEACON JOURNAL, 8/7). When asked to comment, Ohio State AD Gene Smith said, “I can’t comment just yet and I want to let the university investigators do their job. I will certainly have something to say when the time is right” (TWITTER.com, 8/6).

Meanwhile, around 200 people last night "gathered for about 20 minutes outside Ohio Stadium," where they rallied in support of Meyer (CLEVELAND.com, 8/6). One sign read, "ESPN = Fake News," though the reporter who broke the story, Brett McMurphy, is no longer with the network. Another sign "mocked the #MeToo movement, saying, 'Me Too! I support Urban Meyer & the Bucks'" (N.Y. POST, 8/7).

Network TV News Shows Cover Brian France DUI Arrest

NASCAR Chair & CEO Brian France’s DUI arrest found its way into the opening segment of two network news shows last night. CBS’ “Evening News” teased the report in the opening of its telecast, with NBC’s “Nightly News” reporting on France about 15 minutes into the broadcast. ABC’s “World News” did not report on France.

NBCSN’s “NASCAR America” led with France’s arrest, with a report from NBCSN’s Nate Ryan on how this could affect the day-to-day operations of NASCAR. That is contrasted by FS1’s “NASCAR Race Hub,” which reported on France 15 minutes into the broadcast. FS1’s Adam Alexander read a statement from France, but there was no discussion among the co-hosts about his arrest (THE DAILY).

The Univ. of Miami and Adidas yesterday unveiled the school's new Primeknit A1 football uniforms, featuring "subtle changes from what the team wore last season." More "block-style lettering" on the back nameplates "accentuates the numbers on the jerseys and the addition of Miami’s 'U' logo to the front collar." UM will have "orange, white and green versions of the uniform" (South Florida SUN SENTINEL, 8/7).

Meanwhile, Arizona State football also revealed its new Adidas look, again using the company's Primeknit A1 sub-brand. It is "not a major overhaul but does have one significant feature," as the "state of Arizona flag is woven" into the fabric. There is "no word yet as to whether this feature will only be on the maroon jersey" (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 8/7).
