MLB's Manfred Addresses League's Ties To Daily Fantasy Sites

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred today appeared on ESPN Radio's "Mike & Mike" and addressed his league’s relationship with daily fantasy companies. He said, “You want to make sure that the fantasy organizations have appropriate safeguards in place to make sure that the games are fair, there’s not an inappropriate use of information and that fans who engage on these platforms have an opportunity to win. We’re very comfortable with the legality of the games that are being offered by DraftKings." Manfred added, "I have never said that I am in favor of legalized gambling and I want to be clear: Fantasy is not gambling in my view." NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell also are appearing on "Mike & Mike" this morning (“Mike & Mike,” ESPN Radio, 10/27).

MLB has scheduled a variety of national TV and radio appearances to promote the start of the World Series, as has been custom in recent years. Manfred will make his first appearance since succeeding Bud Selig in responding to fan questions on MLB.com’s Chatting Cage. “The Ellen Degeneres Show,” a regular presence during the World Series each year, taped a segment on the event yesterday, while “Extra” and “Access Hollywood” also have sent crews to K.C. Former Mets P Bobby Ojeda will partake in a traditional ESPN “carwash” tomorrow in Bristol, Conn., and former Mets C Mike Piazza will appear tomorrow night on NBC’s “Late Night With Seth Meyers” (Eric Fisher, Staff Writer).

Proposed Legislation In Illinois Would Regulate Daily Fantasy Sites

A bill to regulate daily fantasy sports today is expected to be introduced in Illinois. State Rep. Mike Zalewski said that the legislation is "aimed at protecting consumers in the state from 'draining' their bank accounts by playing too much and making sure they have a legitimate chance of winning." He added that the bill would "create standards for auditing daily fantasy companies that want to do business in the state and prohibit their employees from playing in contests on other sites, among other restrictions" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 10/27).

Meanwhile, FanDuel Chief Counsel Christian Genetski in a letter to NCAA Exec VP Mark Lewis said that the company "would not stop offering NCAA games." Genetski "maintained that the NCAA has no legal basis for forcing FanDuel to stop its college games because names when tied to statistics aren't subject to the approval of the athletes and 'cannot implicate their amateur status'" (ESPN.com, 10/26).

Bucks Submit Initial Arena Development Proposal To City

The Bucks ownership group late yesterday submitted its "first arena development plan" to the city of Milwaukee for review, proposing about $1B in development on almost 25 acres downtown. The plan includes "construction of the six-story arena and demolition of the BMO Harris Bradley Center and its neighboring parking structure to the west." The Bradley Center property "would be redeveloped." Bucks ownership "would lead the overall development, but plans to recruit other developers to participate." The project is expected to last more than 10 years (BIZJOURNALS.com, 10/26).
