Bills-Jaguars Game Earns Close To 34 Million Live Streams Via Yahoo

By John Ourand

Yahoo logged 15.2 million unique viewers and 33.6 million streams for Sunday’s Bills-Jaguars game in London, a number that NFL execs believe will make it the most streamed sporting event in U.S. history. The league says more than 460 million total minutes of video were consumed. The 33.6 million streams also are well above the 3.5 million streams that Yahoo promised advertisers it would deliver. The NFL says these numbers would be a top 10 show in the U.S., averaging less than “Thursday Night Football” and more than “MNF.” The league expects viewer numbers to increase when they add in over-the-air TV numbers in Buffalo, Jacksonville and London, plus digital numbers from China.

NFL Senior VP/Media Strategy, Business Development & Sales Hans Schroeder said that an individual stream was counted if viewers stayed and watched for more than three seconds. In order to increase the number of streams, the game was on autoplay to anyone visiting the Yahoo.com home page. As much as 33% of the audience (more than 5 million viewers) came from 180 international markets. While acknowledging that some people experienced glitches “on the edges,” Schroeder was enthused about how well the game performed online.

F1's U.S. Grand Prix Draws Crowd Of 100,000-Plus Despite Rain

A crowd of 101,667 attended yesterday's F1 U.S. Grand Prix at Circuit Of The Americas, and officials announced a three-day attendance of 224,011. This came despite "28-plus consecutive hours of storms that dumped approximately 8 inches of rain" in the Austin area. Driver Lewis Hamilton won his second U.S. Grand Prix and "clinched his second consecutive title" for the F1 season (FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 10/26). Conditions evolved from "sopping wet to relatively dry throughout the two-hour race" (AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN, 10/26).

NASCAR Race At Talladega Ends In Controversy, Called "Debacle"

Yesterday's Sprint Cup Series CampingWorld.com 500 at Talladega Superspeedway ended in "one of the most controversial finishes in NASCAR history." After "one try at an overtime finish was ruled not to be an attempt because the field had not yet crossed the start-finish line, a second ended immediately after it started when a multi-car crash broke out and necessitated a caution flag effectively ending the race." Joey Logano was ruled the winner (MRN.com, 10/25).

The race became "simply a colossal embarrassment" and a "complete debacle, unsatisfying in every way for fans." The race winner and the drivers who advanced in the Chase were "determined by video-tape after a crash" (USA TODAY, 10/26).

MLS' Decision Day Creates Drama At End Of Regular Season

MLS yesterday staged its "first attempt at Decision Day, having every game in each conference kick off at the same time on the final day of the regular season." The day "passed in a flurry of chaos." It was a "just ending for a league that’s proud of its parity, as teams shuffled up and down the standings all day long" (SI.com, 10/25). ESPN FC goes with the header, "Major League Soccer's Decision Day Serves Up Thrilling End To The Season" (ESPNFC.us, 10/25).

Maritime Groups Challenge Chris Hansen's Seattle Arena Plan

Chris Hansen's plan to build an arena in Seattle's Sodo District will be challenged today, as a coalition of six groups will deliver a letter "asking Seattle City Council and the city's transportation department to postpone deciding whether to hand over a street to Hansen to accommodate the arena's blueprint." The letter says that "all 'final transaction documents' for the arena must first be resolved before any vote on the street location is held." Among the items the maritime groups want resolved is "whether revamping KeyArena actually represents a better option" (SEATTLE TIMES, 10/26).

UNLV Pursues County Land Close To Planned Stadium Site

UNLV Planning & Construction Exec Dir David Frommer plans to talk to Clark County (Nev.) officials today about "acquiring 38 acres owned by the county that sit between" Thomas & Mack Center and a proposed stadium site. The school wants the 38 acres "because it's a key connection between the campus and the 42-acre privately owned site" where UNLV hopes to build a football stadium. The county's 38 acres are across the street from McCarran Int'l Airport (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 10/24).

NBA Coaches To Wear Pin Honoring Flip Saunders, Who Died Sunday

NBA coaches "will wear a lapel pin this season to honor the memory" of T'Wolves President of Basketball Operations and coach Flip Saunders, who died yesterday at the age of 60 after battling cancer. Saunders upon returning to the T'Wolves in '13 "grabbed a level of influence within the Wolves that was unmatched in the NBA" (ESPN.com, 10/25). He "leaves his fingerprints all over the organization" as the winningest coach in franchise history. His front-office moves leave the T'Wolves with "two incredible building blocks in Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns (CBSSPORTS.com, 10/25).

When it came to basketball in Minnesota, "just about everyone was touched by Flip Saunders," and "everyone seemed to know or love 'Flip'" (ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, 10/26).

This Week In SportsBusiness Journal....

This week's In-Depth examines the marathon and endurance race industry, with a closer look at how obstacle course properties are focusing on long-term survival.

Final Jeopardy!

Friday’s “Final Jeopardy!” category was “Flowers.”

“The flower pictured here is called this, also a disparaging term for people on the political left.”

Friday night’s edition of “Jeopardy!” featured the category “NHL Teams.”

For $200: “In 2006 they dropped the word ‘Mighty’ from their name.”

For $400: “They sport the logo seen here.”

For $600: “For much of the ‘80s, ‘90s and 2000s, Mario Lemieux was their captain.”

For $800: “With 24, including one pre-NHL victory, they’ve won the most Stanley Cups.”

For $1000: “This alliterative team is the oldest NHL team in the U.S.”

Laugh Track.... Meet The Mets

Mets 3B David Wright, SS Wilmer Flores and Ps Matt Harvey and Jacob deGrom appeared together on ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” Friday night and were greeted with a standing ovation from the studio audience and a “Let’s Go Mets” cheer. Host Jimmy Kimmel said, “What a great year to be a Mets fan. I mean, who the hell expected this to happen?” Wright: “Funny thing, Spring Training we actually had a meeting about what it would be like when we got to the playoffs, and here we are.” Kimmel said, “How stupid would you feel right now if you'd had that meeting and you weren't in the playoffs?” Kimmel said of many fans dressing up as long-haired deGrom for Halloween: “I wanted to point out before they named it after you it was called … the ‘Brunette Seductress.’” Kimmel said of the champagne celebrations after teams win a championship, “When you guys win the World Series -- I did say ‘when’ you win the World Series -- don't wear the goggles. It looks like the ski patrol is having a New Year's Eve party. Tear the plastic down and destroy the locker room. That's what a celebration is supposed to be” (“Jimmy Kimmel Live,” ABC, 10/24).

Kimmel said, “Tickets to see the Mets for their World Series games here in New York, they're saying they're going to be the most expensive tickets in baseball history. The average price for a scalped ticket to the Mets game is $1,700. It's terrible. The only people who can afford to go to a Mets game are Derek Jeter and A-Rod right now” (“Jimmy Kimmel Live,” ABC, 10/23).

Final Jeopardy....

“What is a Bleeding Heart?”

Correct responses to the “NHL Teams” category:

For $400: “Who are the Tampa Bay Lightning?”

For $600: “Who are the Pittsburgh Penguins?”
