Cubs Celebrate Wrigley's 100th Anniversary With Throwback Game

The Cubs during today's home game against the D-Backs will celebrate Wrigley Field's 100th anniversary with "special pregame ceremonies, featuring past Cubs greats." The Cubs will wear the uniforms of the Chicago Federal League team, the "first occupants of the ballpark," while the D-Backs will wear K.C. Packers uniforms (Illinois DAILY HERALD, 4/23). The "buzz should be back" at the ballpark "for one day at least." Baseball HOFers Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, Fergie Jenkins and Andre Dawson will be on hand, as will Pro Football HOFers Dick Butkus and Gale Sayers (CSNCHICAGO.com, 4/23). The first 30,000 fans in attendance will receive a replica 1914 Chicago Federals jersey, "and the first 10,000 fans will get a birthday cupcake" (MLB.com, 4/23).

The Chicago Tribune's website today includes an interactive feature tied to Wrigley Field's official 100th anniversary.

A's Shoot Down Oakland's 10-Year O.co Coliseum Lease Proposal

The A's last night "shot down a deal to play at O.co Coliseum for the foreseeable future," claiming that the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Authority's 10-year lease proposal "doesn't meet all their requirements." A's Dir of PR Bob Rose said in a statement, "We cannot accept the terms of the offer." The Coliseum Authority released a statement "heralding the proposal." Terms of the plan "were shared with MLB officials but were not disclosed to the public" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 4/22).

Anaheim To Release Appraisal Of Angel Stadium Amid Lease Talks

The Anaheim City Council last night unanimously agreed to release an appraisal of Angel Stadium and surrounding parking lots as the city continues to negotiate a lease with the Angels. The appraisal "will examine the venue's value if the Angels opt to stay in Anaheim and what the land would be worth if the team leaves town when the lease expires" in '19. City Attorney Michael Houston said that it "will be posted on the city's website on May 2" (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 4/23).

Safety-Kleen Renews NASCAR Sponsorship In Multiyear Deal

By Tripp Mickle, Staff Writer

Safety-Kleen has renewed its sponsorship with NASCAR. The oil collecting and re-refining company will continue to be the sport’s official environmental services supplier, a position it has held since '04. Financial terms of the multiyear agreement were not available, but sources valued the deal in the mid-six figures annually. Under the agreement, Safety-Kleen will continue to capture cleaning solvents, oil fluids and lubricants at NASCAR races for use in other products.

The company is a founding partner of NASCAR Green, the sport’s environmental platform. NASCAR said Safety-Kleen last year collected and re-refined more than 200,000 gallons of NASCAR oil at tracks and team shops. The use of re-refined oil limits the sport’s carbon footprint. Safety-Kleen captures 200 million gallons of used oil a year and recycles it to produce approximately 140 million gallons of lubricating oil.

Sacramento City Council Reacts Positively To Updated Arena Plan

The Sacramento City Council last night offered "mostly glowing reviews" of the city's plan to help finance a new NBA Kings arena. This comes after a report released Monday showed that the overall project cost has increased from $448M. The City Council is now expected to "approve the project's financing plan, development agreement and environmental report at its May 13 meeting" (SACRAMENTO BEE, 4/23).

NYC FC's Plans For Training Facility Win Local Approval

MLS expansion club NYC FC has "scored a place to practice" at Manhattanville College in Westchester County, N.Y. The team last night "received the approvals it was looking for from the town of Harrison's planning board." NYC FC will "finance the renovation of a gymnasium, upgrade existing fields and add another pitch by replacing a tennis court." No new buildings or expansion of the overall athletic facilities "beyond the current footprint are called for" (Westchester JOURNAL NEWS, 4/23).

Jay Z/Beyonce Concert Will Add To Rose Bowl's Big Event Tally

The Pasadena City Council last night "unanimously approved a concert" at the Rose Bowl featuring Jay Z and Beyonce "to take place in August." It will mark the "18th major event at the stadium the council has approved" on the '14 calendar. A city ordinance "limits large scale events at the Rose Bowl to 12 per year, but the council can approve additional events as they come up." Officials said that six concerts "would be the most ever to take place at the stadium in a single year" (PASADENA STAR-NEWS, 4/23).

He’s going up against Gold Medal-winning dancers and he did not win. …The NHL playoffs are in full swing, with the top teams competing to make it to the Stanley Cup finals. Every year at the end of the regular season, they give out awards like ‘most valuable player.’ They also give out other awards, sort of like the ones in high school yearbooks like ‘most likely to succeed,’ ‘class clown,’ stuff like that.” A segment was shown where Fallon gave superlatives to NHL players while their pictures were shown on the screen.
