Warriors Shifting S.F. Arena Plans To New Site Near AT&T Park

The Warriors today formally announced that they have scrapped their previously desired arena site at Piers 30-32 in S.F. and instead have opted for a new location on 3rd St. south of AT&T Park. Warriors co-Owner Joe Lacob said that "spiraling costs and political pushback presented too many obstacles to overcome within the desired time frame." He added that the goal is to have the new site "ready to open for the 2018-19 season" (CSNBAYAREA.com, 4/21).

The team released a video announcement about the purchase of the land in Mission Bay and its vision for a new venue.

Boston Basks In Accomplishment Of Successful Marathon Monday

Boston is “enjoying a runner’s high today after a triumphant Boston Marathon – an idyllic, cathartic and historic spectacle that drew a crowd of more than a million, honored those killed and wounded in last year’s bombings and saw its first American men’s winner in more than three decades.” The crowd was "as vigilant as it was jubilant." Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick said security “struck the right balance” between promoting safety and preserving the celebratory tone of Marathon Monday. Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said that the "tight security measures will stay in place 'for now' for other big events, but restrictions could be eased in the long term" (BOSTON HERALD, 4/22).

Sochi Games Broadcasts Help Comcast Achieve Big Gains In Q1

Comcast today reported that its Q1 net income "soared 30%, largely from gains made by its NBCUniversal broadcasts" of the Sochi Games. Revenue rose 14% to $17.4B, up from $15.3B in the year-ago-period. Excluding the Winter Games, revenue rose 6.5% to $16.3B. NBCUniversal revenue rose 28.8% to $6.9B, driven by Sochi Games-related revenue of $1.1B that "went to its broadcast and cable outlets." Comcast added new video customers for the second consecutive quarter (VARIETY.com, 4/22).

Upstart Detroit Radio Station Set To Acquire Pistons Rights

Detroit-based WMGC-FM today is expected to announce that it has acquired the radio rights to Pistons game broadcasts, marking what "would be the new sports station's first foray into Detroit's pro sports." It would also break up the "monopoly" of rival station WXYT-FM, which holds rights to the Lions, Red Wings and Tigers. That situation "frequently causes scheduling conflicts." This past season, 79 regular-season Pistons games aired on WXYT, with three on WWJ-AM (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 4/22).

Long Beach Looking At Multiyear Extension For IndyCar Race

Long Beach city staff today will present documents to City Council “suggesting the contract with the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach be extended to June 30, 2018, with yearly options to extend” to '20. The deal would keep IndyCar “at Long Beach until then and put proposals to bring in Formula One racing on hold.” Revisions could be made to the pact, meaning it would not “entirely slam the door to F1” (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 4/22).

CDI Faces Scrutiny From La. Racing Commission Over Fair Grounds

The Louisiana State Racing Commission today is slated to address Churchill Downs Inc.'s "10-year license approval to own and operate the Fair Grounds and its off-track betting parlors." CDI's original license was "unanimously approved by the Commission" in '04. But the Commission and the state's Horsemen's Benevolent & Protective Association "have expressed their concerns about the current state of the track," which saw a 12% year-to-year dip in wagering for the '13-14 meet (New Orleans TIMES-PICAYUNE, 4/22).

ManU Fire Manager Moyes, Who Was Ferguson's Chosen Successor

EPL club Manchester United manager David Moyes "has been sacked, only 10 months after succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson." Moyes "was chosen by Ferguson" and signed a six-year deal with the club, which sits at seventh in the table with four games remaining and is "guaranteed to record" its lowest points tally since the EPL was formed. ManU "will miss out on Champions League football for the first time since 1995 and are in danger of missing out on European competition altogether for the first time since 1990" (BBC.com, 4/22).
