Support grows for USF to name Tom Jurich AD....CFL Toronto Argonauts nearing sellout for opener....Sonoma Raceway to honor fire victims, heroes

Sources: Support Growing For USF To Name Tom Jurich AD

There is a "groundswell of support" for former Louisville AD Tom Jurich to be named to the same post with USF, according to sources. The sources said that among those "backing Jurich are major boosters and even some current USF coaches." Jurich "neither fueled nor extinguished the speculation." Just how "seriously he would be considered" by USF President Dr. Judy Genshaft is unknown. To this point, USF's AD search committee has "met only once, at which time no candidate was mentioned by name." However, it is "widely believed the school wants to announce a new AD before July 4" (TAMPAYBAY.com, 6/22).

CFL Argonauts Near Sellout For Saturday Grey Cup Rematch

The CFL Toronto Argonauts have sold "approximately 16,000 tickets for their home opener Saturday night," a Grey Cup rematch with the Calgary Stampeders at BMO Field. The venue has a seating capacity of "about 26,500 for football but that’s been reduced to 18,000 with the temporary closing of the upper-east balcony." MLSE this offseason "reduced the average ticket price" by 23%. So about 2,600 tickets "will be sold" for as low as $15 (all figures C) per game for season-ticket holders and $19 per game for single-seat buyers. The Argos also have "boosted season-tickets sales" by 25%, to 6,000 (CP, 6/21).

Sonoma Raceway To Honor Fire Victims During NASCAR Weekend

The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series returns to Sonoma Raceway on Sunday for the first time since fires ravaged the area in October, and the speedway will "pay tribute to those affected, recognizing first responders and local heroes and lending its support to ongoing rebuilding efforts." During the pre-race show Sunday, several people who were "nominated for heroic acts during the fires will be honored as part of the raceway’s 'Sonoma Rising' initiative." The top 10 NASCAR drivers will be "introduced alongside first responders from North Bay agencies." About 1,100 fire survivors "will be treated to a day at the races through the initiative" (Santa Rosa PRESS DEMOCRAT, 6/22).
