Oklahoman Editor Apologizes For "Mr. Unreliable" Headline On Durant

OKLAHOMAN Sports Editor Mike Sherman today on the paper's website pens an apology for a headline from this morning's edition that referred to Thunder F Kevin Durant as "Mr Unreliable." Sherman writes the headline "missed the mark," adding the "words were overstated and unduly harsh" (NEWSOK.com, 5/1). Thunder GM Sam Presti, referring to Durant's work on behalf of tornado victims, said, "What I witnessed from Kevin Durant on the streets of Moore, Oklahoma, a year ago is the absolute definition of reliability" (NEWSOK.com, 5/1).



ESPN's Marc Stein wrote on his Twitter feed, "Orlando Sentinel, fairly or unfairly, gets blamed for hastening @SHAQ exit in '96 w/ anti-Shaq poll. Oklahoman bound to get similar heat now." NBA.com's David Aldridge tweeted, "There are 29 other teams who would love to have an 'unreliable' player like Kevin Durant. No problem w/strong opinions, but...wow." CBSSports.com's Royce Young: "It should be noted: @BerryTramel's ... column very fair & spot on. Just the headline that's, eh." MSP Sports Founder Tim McGhee: "Apparently, the Oklahoman is the NY Post's Triple A club."

David Stern "Delighted" With Adam Silver's Performance To Date

Former NBA Commissioner David Stern today said he is "delighted" with current Commissioner Adam Silver's performance to date. Stern at the DLD technology conference in N.Y. said, "He and I worked together for 22 years. I told everyone he was going to be great at his job and I'm delighted to see that I was right." Stern is consulting digital companies on "building global brands" in sports, among other things. Stern said, "Everyone's interested in competition it seems. And I have a bit of experience in that department" (WSJ.com, 5/1).

Rapids Partner With Ciao Telecom For First-Ever Jersey Sponsorship

The Rapids and Dallas-based Ciao Telecom have signed a sponsorship agreement that will feature the company’s logo on the club’s uniforms through ‘18. The Rapids will debut jerseys featuring the Ciao logo Saturday against the Galaxy at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The agreement is the first front-of-jersey sponsorship for the Rapids. The deal was brokered by Denver-based Impression Sports & Entertainment (Rapids).

CBS Sports Network To Air Weekly Minor League Baseball Games

Minor League Baseball has signed a broadcast deal with CBS Sports Network to run a Game of the Week beginning tonight and running through early August. The coverage will begin with a Triple-A Int’l League game between the Pawtucket Red Sox and Indianapolis Indians, but coverage will feature multiple classifications of play. Anchoring the coverage will be Dick Gabriel and Doug Flynn. Aiding the deal was San Diego-based JMI Sports.

MiLB execs branded the pact as its first "truly comprehensive television package," and in part is an outgrowth of its "Project Brand" national marketing efforts being led by MiLB Enterprises President & CMO Michael Hand. The deal also adds to a growing level of coverage of the affiliated minors within the existing MiLB.TV streaming package. MiLB President & CEO Pat O’Conner said, "We feel this partnership with CBS Sports Network will truly capture the emotion of our game to a national audience week after week."

IMG Learfield Ticket Solutions Lands Three New Partner Schools

IMG Learfield Ticket Solutions today announced partnerships with three universities – Virginia Tech, New Mexico and Southern Miss – bringing its total number of partners to 29. IMGLTS also named managers for the ticketing operations at each school: Robin Minter at Virginia Tech, Joe Gehling at New Mexico and Brendan Jones at Southern Miss. All three schools also have deals with IMG either for multimedia rights or trademark licensing through Collegiate Licensing Company.

Also today, IMG College's Collegiate Licensing Company announced that it has extended its partnership with Drexel Univ. to continue managing its trademark licensing program, signing a new five-year deal through '19 (THE DAILY).

City Of Newton, Iowa, To Title Sponsor NASCAR Nationwide Race

Iowa Speedway today announced that the City of Newton will serve as title sponsor of its May 18 NASCAR Nationwide Series race, which will be called the "Get to Know Newton 250 presented by Sherwin-Williams." The deal is part of the "Get to Know Newton" campaign recently launched by the track's hometown. Track President Jimmy Small said, "We consider this entitlement an investment in Newton and are excited to provide our community the opportunity to deliver its message in the national spotlight" (NEWTONDAILYNEWS.com, 5/1).

Roc Nation today via its official Twitter feed announced that Roc Nation Sports has signed NBA Draft prospect G James Young for representation (TWITTER.com, 5/1).

Samsung today announced the launch of a new mobile app centered around Heat F LeBron James that will be available exclusively for owners of the Galaxy phone. The app, titled "LeBron," features four sections: "Athlete," "NBA Playoffs," "Style" and "Journey" (Samsung).

The PGA of America today formally announced a deal that "will bring the 2022 PGA Championship to Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J." (AP, 5/1).

ESPN today announced that the SEC Network will telecast a football game featuring every school in the conference during the first four weeks of the '14 college football season. The network released its tentative schedule through Sept. 20 (ESPN).

St. Louis will be the home of a USL Pro soccer team starting in '15. The franchise, whose name and logo "will be announced later," will play home games at the Soccer Park in Fenton (STLTODAY.com, 5/1).

Fantasy Sports Television Network (FNTSY) today announced a partnership with Bloomberg Sports that will include a daily 30-minute show on fantasy and analytics called "Bloomberg Sports Stats Insights" (FNTSY).
