Under Armour Sees Q1 Profits Soar, But Warns Of Slowing Growth

Under Armour today reported a Q1 profit increase of 73%, "driven by strong sales in apparel and footwear." Net income jumped to $13.5M, compared with $7.8M in Q1 '13. The "results beat analysts' sales estimates and earnings expectations" (BALTIMORESUN.com, 4/24). However, UA warned that growth in '14 "might not be as strong as last year when the company benefited from the relaunch of its bags business and robust winter sales." Shares traded down as much as 10% "after the company's downbeat comments" (REUTERS, 4/24).

At presstime, shares of UA were trading at $50.48, down 7.3% (THE DAILY).

NCAA D-I BOD Endorses Changes To Governance Structure

The NCAA D-I BOD is "one step closer to approving a new governance system in August" after the board today "endorsed the restructuring process" drafted by the Steering Committee on Governance. Under the proposal, the division would still be led by a BOD composed "primarily of university presidents," but "new voices would be added." The BOD "would focus chiefly on oversight and strategic issues, while leaving much of the day-to-day policy and legislative responsibility" to a new group tentatively called "the Council" (NCAA.org, 4/24).

Santa Anita To Hold Twilight Racing On Most Fridays This Spring

Santa Anita Park "plans to hold twilight horse racing on most Fridays," with a first post time of 3:00pm PT during its 40-day spring meet that begins tomorrow. An "exception to the new Friday schedule is May 2, on the eve of the Kentucky Derby, when Santa Anita's first race will go off" at 12:30pm. In an "effort to reverse a long decline in live attendance," the track also recently announced it is "offering free weekend admission to its infield area during the spring meet" (LATIMES.com, 4/24).

All Bills Cheerleaders Activities Suspended In Wake Of Lawsuit

Stejon Productions President Stephanie Mateczun, whose company manages the Bills cheerleaders, has "suspended all activities" for the Buffalo Jills "after five former Jills sued the Bills and her company." Mateczun said that she has "no idea how long the suspension will last." The suit alleges that the team, Stejon and previous Jills manager Citadel Communications failed to pay the $8 minimum wage "for all the hours they worked." It also claims the defendants "exposed them to degrading treatment ... deducted money from their pay for infractions of rules and kept their gratuities" (BUFFALONEWS.com, 4/24).
