Padres’ Garfinkel Resigns As President & CEO After Four Years

By Eric Fisher

Padres President & CEO Tom Garfinkel resigned today after more than four years on the job. Garfinkel, who previously held positions with Chip Ganassi Racing, Texaco and Miller Brewing, followed former Padres Vice Chair Jeff Moorad to the club from the D'Backs in '09. Garfinkel then remained with the Padres following the departure of Moorad early last year and for 11 months after the arrival of a new ownership group led by Ron Fowler and Peter Seidler. Fowler will assume Garfinkel's responsibilities on an interim basis while a replacement is sought. Garfinkel had been among the point figures on the club's high-profile impasse with Time Warner Cable to carry FS San Diego.

Multiple industry sources pointed to an ideological divide on the direction of the club between Garfinkel and ownership, but the move arrives without acrimony. Garfinkel in an e-mail wrote, "My time at the Padres has been incredible. I thank them for the opportunity and wish them nothing but the best in the future." Garfinkel said he has not determined his future career path, and will take some time off before deciding.

Hulman & Co. CEO Mark Miles Announces New Corporate Structure

By Tripp Mickle, Staff Writer

Hulman & Co. CEO Mark Miles today announced a new organizational structure at an all-staff meeting. The structure divides the company, which include the IndyCar Series and Indianapolis Motor Speedway, into seven divisions. Miles said he still is searching for a president of Hulman Motorsports, who will oversee the “commercial aspects” of IndyCar and IMS. In an e-mail to staff, Miles added, “I hope to finalize this appointment soon.” Until he names someone to that position, Miles will oversee IMS and IndyCar sales, PR, marketing and business affairs.

Under the new structure, former IMS President Jeff Belskus will continue as Hulman & Company President and add the CFO role to his duties. He will be responsible for HR, IT, finance and the master plan for more than $100M in upgrades to IMS. Longtime IMS communications exec Doug Boles was named IMS President, a job that includes overseeing concessions, guest services, retail and ticketing. Derrick Walker is President of IndyCar Operations & Competition, Robby Greene is President of IMS Productions and General Counsel Gretchen Snelling will oversee the legal division.

This comes after Hulman and its racing subsidiaries last restructured high-level exec positions in January.

Ryan Reynolds Promotes Animated Film "Turbo" On "Today" Show

Actor Ryan Reynolds this morning appeared on NBC's "Today"  to promote his new animated film, "Turbo." Reynolds said, "This was how it was pitched to me: A guy with an impossible dream of winning the Indy 500 and I said, 'What's so crazy about that?' And they said, 'Well, he's a snail,' and I said, 'You better animate this movie, because what a painful production that's going to be.'"

Following the interview, Reynolds competed against the show's co-hosts in a game of skee ball in which each player tried to get a car representing a "Turbo" character across the finish line first. NBC Sports Network's Leigh Diffey provided race commentary, while IndyCar drivers Tony Kanaan, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Helio Castroneves were on hand to wave the green flag and present the wreath to the winner. Reynolds won and said, "In my defense, the film is called 'Turbo,' not 'Matt Lauer,' so I had to win" ("Today," NBC, 7/9).
