BCS Presidents Meeting This Week To Approve Playoff Format

The BCS Presidential Oversight Committee meets tomorrow in DC to decide the format of a college football playoff, and sources said that the "approval of a playoff is all but a foregone conclusion." Presidents are expected to approve a 12-year deal for a "four-team, seeded tournament" starting in '14. They "might also discuss the method of selecting the four teams" and "could even go as far as approving the formation of a selection committee" (SI.com, 6/22).

Meanwhile, Gator Bowl Association President Rick Catlett and Jaguars President Mark Lamping are meeting today to "iron out details about how the NFL franchise can assist the city" of Jacksonville in landing a college football championship game. Catlett "feels uplifted by the team-player approach" new Jaguars Owner Shahid Khan has taken in pursuing the game (JACKSONVILLE.com, 6/23).

NFL Network To Launch New "NFL AM" Show In 6:00am ET Time Slot

NFL Network today will announce plans to launch "NFL AM," a new show that will begin at 6:00am ET starting July 30. The show will replace rebroadcasts of "Total Access." NFL Network Exec Producer Eric Weinberger said elements of the program might seem "like 'Fox & Friends' meets a radio show." Brian Webber, who has been with FSN, will co-host with Nicole Zaloumis. There will also be analysis and reporting from Eric Davis, Mark Kriegel and Steve Wyche, among others (USA TODAY, 6/25).

Orlando-Area Leaders Reach Deal To Revive Citrus Bowl Renovations

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs today plan to announce that they have "reached a deal to revive the stalled renovation" at the Florida Citrus Bowl. Dyer said that the city plans to issue at least $140M in bonds to finance the project. Supporters of the upgrades said that the improvements "would allow the Citrus Bowl to compete against newer stadiums to host a changing landscape of college bowl games, neutral-site games and other events" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 6/25).

ESPN Today Activates Around First Day Of Wimbledon Coverage

ESPN, through the grassroots agency Awestruck, hired more than 60 people to dress in white and travel around New York City this morning as a way to promote the first day of the network's Wimbledon coverage. The "brand ambassadors" will be at Union Square, Grand Central, Penn Station, and Times Square. They will congregate between 9:30-10:30am ET to watch ESPN's Wimbledon telecast on the ABC Supersign in Times Square.

Heat Holding Parade In Miami Today To Celebrate NBA Championship

The Heat today are holding a parade in Miami to celebrate their NBA Championship. Festivities begin at 9:00am ET, with the parade itself to begin at 11:00am. Once the procession reaches AmericanAirlines Arena, there will be an "additional private celebration reserved for season-ticket holders" at 12:30pm ET. Neither the parade nor the indoor event "will be shown on the big screen on the arena's exterior" (MIAMIHERALD.com, 6/24). The 15,000 tickets for the indoor festivities were "accounted for within five minutes of being made available Saturday" (SUN-SENTINEL.com, 6/23).

The Heat will provide free water stations along the route that will be "manned by the fire department." South Florida Dunkin' Donuts locations today only will sell heart-shaped donuts with the word "Heat" on them (MIAMI HERALD, 6/25).

Timbers Draw Sellout Crowd For Historic Win Over Rival Sounders

The Timbers yesterday defeated the rival Sounders for the first time in MLS play in front of a sellout crowd of 20,438 at Jeld-Wen Field in Portland (Mult., 6/25). The Timbers Army supporters group "outdid itself" by raising a banner that covered the entire north side of the stadium and read, "Legends are born when the previous are surpassed" (PORTLAND TRIBUNE, 6/25). Sounders F Eddie Johnson: "We dug ourselves in a hole and when you have 20,000 fans behind the home team, it's hard to come back" (SEATTLETIMES.com, 6/24).

Meanwhile, a Red Bulls franchise record home crowd of 25,187 last night attended the team's 3-2 win over DC United at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J. (AP, 6/24). It was the "first time this season" the venue had been sold out (NJ.com, 6/24).

Crowd Of 48,000 Turns Out For Soccer Exhibition At Sun Life

A crowd of 48,327 was on hand at Sun Life Stadium Saturday for a charity soccer exhibition featuring FC Barcelona F Lionel Messi. The Dolphins will host at least two more soccer matches this summer – a Chelsea-AC Milan friendly on July 28 and an Aug. 16 Boca Juniors-America de Cali exhibition (MIAMI HERALD, 6/24). With the Marlins now playing in their new ballpark, the Dolphins management team is "trying to take advantage of its new flexibility to use the stadium in different ways." Dolphins CEO Mike Dee: "We want to have a pipeline full of soccer events every year" (PALM BEACH POST, 6/22).

Travelers Championship Attendance Up, According To Estimates

There are "strong indications that attendance rose dramatically from last year" for the PGA Tour Travelers Championship, which concluded yesterday. While official figures were not tallied, Tournament Dir Nathan Grube "figured there was a 15 to 20 percent increase this year" for the week. Last year's attendance was estimated at 240,000. Grube: "It was a great week. Every metric we use was up – concessions, parking, gate sales, apparel, different sales points, even the eyeball test" (HARTFORD COURANT, 6/25).

The Hawks reportedly have offered Danny Ferry their GM job and "are engaged in serious talks toward completing a deal." Ferry would replace Rick Sund, who had "been leaning toward retirement or taking on an advisory role" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 6/24). 

Former Pacers CEO Donnie Walsh possibly could "return to the franchise in some capacity," according to sources (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 6/23).

The LPGA today is scheduled to announce that it has named Mike Nichols Chief Business Officer of the Symetra Tour – Road to the LPGA, effective July 2. Nichols since '06 has served as LPGA VP/Tournament Business Affairs (THE DAILY).

Sprint is running two full-page ads in this morning's USA Today touting the company's sponsorships with the NBA and NASCAR. The NBA ad features the background of a basketball court and the copy, "We're Proud To Have Been Part Of A Truly Legendary Season." The NASCAR ad features an image of the HTC smartphone and the header, "Unlimited Love For NASCAR" (THE DAILY).

Hublot is running a full-page ad in today's N.Y. Times featuring Heat F Dwyane Wade and congratulating him for winning the NBA Championship (THE DAILY).

Taking Attendance....

The MLB Rangers sold out their 22nd game of the season on Sunday night, “the most in franchise history.” The team also passed the 1.5-million mark in attendance on their 35th home game, “another club record” (STAR-TELEGRAM.com, 6/24).

An Angel Stadium-record total of 133,035 fans attended this weekend’s three-game series between the Dodgers and Angels (AP, 6/24).

A Citi Field-record crowd of 42,364 attended last night’s Yankees-Mets game, breaking the previous record of 42,122 set on Saturday night. The three-game weekend series drew a total of 124,677 fans (ESPN.com, 6/25).

A sellout crowd of 4,652 attended Saturday night’s UFC on FX 4 event at Ovation Hall in Atlantic City, N.J. (SI.com, 6/23).

Spaulding Rehabiliation Hospital and ESPN's Tedy Bruschi will host the 9th annual Tee Up with Tedy Golf Tournament at TPC Boston.

The Packers will begin selling tickets at 9:00am CT for the team's annual Family Night scrimmage on Aug. 3.

The NFL Rookie Symposium continues this week in Aurora, Ohio. The four-day event, which began yesterday for NFC draft picks, includes presentations and speeches, videos and workshops focused on preparing the rookies for life in the NFL.
