BCS Commissioners Reach "Consensus" On Four-Team Playoff

Sources said that the BCS commissioners "will recommend a seeded four-team playoff that will feature the 'best four teams' as chosen by a selection committee" to the BCS Presidential Oversight Committee when it meets Tuesday in DC. BCS commissioners emerged from a four-hour meeting yesterday announcing they had "developed a consensus" on college football's postseason. Sources said that the model would be the "best four teams" approach with the selection committee "putting emphasis on conference champions" (CBSSPORTS.com, 6/20). The commissioners confirmed that "the ‘plus one’ model will still be an option on the table" (L.A. TIMES, 6/21).

Magic Today Expected To Introduce Rob Hennigan As Team's New GM

The Magic have hired Thunder Assistant GM Rob Hennigan as their new GM, making the 30-year-old the NBA's youngest at that position. Prior to four years with the Thunder, Hennigan worked for the Spurs, "another highly respected small-market team." Magic CEO Alex Martins "expects the deal to be finalized" today, and the team will formally introduce him today as well. Martins: "He's got experience working for championship organizations beyond his years" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 6/21).

CNBC's Darren Rovell Headed Back To ESPN, Will Appear On ABC

CNBC's Darren Rovell has an agreement in principle to return to ESPN as a sports business reporter. Rovell confirmed the news on his Twitter feed: "I am indeed leaving my home for the last 6 years, @CNBC. ... I will also be doing regular business reporting for ABC News, where I will definitely be covering the food & drink biz" (THE DAILY). Rovell was at ESPN prior to joining CNBC in '06. His last day at NBC Universal will be July 6 (AWFULANNOUNCING.com, 6/20). CNBC "will be making the formal announcement" this morning (THEBIGLEAD.com, 6/20).

SiriusXM Inks Deal With ESPN Radio For Live Wimbledon Coverage

SiriusXM Radio will carry live play-by-play coverage of Wimbledon, as part of an agreement the satellite radio broadcaster signed with ESPN Radio, which holds the tennis tournament's U.S. radio rights. During the week, SiriusXM will carry the matches on Sirius channel 93 and XM channel 206. Weekend matches will be on ESPN Xtra, SiriusXM channel 85.

St. Petersburg Looks To Extend Honda Grand Prix Deal Through '17

The St. Petersburg City Council today will vote on a three-year contract extension with Honda Grand Prix officials to keep the Izod IndyCar Series race in town through '17. Leaders at the Salvador Dali Museum and Mahaffey Theater "want to shorten the 45 days every year that the contract allows the museum to be penned up behind walls of concrete and steel." Under the current deal, the museum is "inside the race course and sealed off from the rest of downtown for more than a month" (TAMPA BAY TIMES, 6/21).

EA Sports Reveals Flyers' Claude Giroux As "NHL 13" Cover Athlete

Flyers F Claude Giroux at last night's NHL Awards in Las Vegas was named the winner of EA Sports' fan vote for the cover of the upcoming video game release, "NHL 13." Giroux prevailed in a tight final vote over Predators G Pekka Rinne, with less than a 1% margin separating the pair. The BlackBerry-sponsored cover vote campaign, extending from March 29 to June 4, generated nearly 26 million votes, including 2 million in the final. EA Sports' fan vote for the cover of the far more popular "Madden NFL 13," by comparison, garnered 19.7 million votes. EA Sports will release "NHL 13" on Sept. 11.

Lundqvist Drops F-Bomb During NHL Awards Telecast On NBCSN

NHL Rangers G Henrik Lundqvist dropped an "F-bomb" on NBC Sports Network at last night's NHL Awards while accepting his first Vezina trophy as the league's top goalie. The crowd at the Wynn "simply laughed with Lundqvist as he apologized." Lundqvist, after saying the curse word: "Sorry. But [the award] feels good. I want to thank my family, mom, dad and my wife" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 6/21). Lundqvist was one of three Swedish players who "claimed major trophies" (AP, 6/20).

Penguins C Evgeni Malkin won his first Hart Trophy, given to the league's MVP. The NHLPA also awarded Malkin the Ted Lindsay Award, presented to the league's most outstanding player as voted by fellow members of the players union (NHLPA).

Artist LeRoy Nieman, Well Known For Sports Images, Dies At Age 91

Artist LeRoy Neiman died yesterday in Manhattan at the age of 91. Neiman's "impressionistic sketches of sporting events and the international high life made him one of the most popular artists" in the U.S. He "offered his fans gaudily colored visual reports on heavyweight boxing matches, Super Bowl games and Olympic contests" (N.Y. TIMES, 6/21). Nieman was the official painter of five Olympiads, and "one face he recorded over and over again was that of Muhammad Ali" (AP, 6/20).

There were about 1,700 tickets to Thunder-Heat NBA Finals Game Five on StubHub as of yesterday with prices ranging from $314 for standing room to $55,884 for a single courtside seat. There were more than 160 listings on eBay with "prices ranging from a starting bid of $1 to a Buy It Now price of $1,900" (South Florida SUN-SENTINEL, 6/21).

The WBO completed its review yesterday of Timothy Bradley’s controversial split-decision victory over Manny Pacquiao, with its five-member international judging panel “all scoring the fight for Pacquiao." However, "the official result will stand" (ESPN.com, 6/20).

Hockey East Conference ADs Wednesday reportedly "voted to formally accept" UConn's men's hockey program as the league's 12th member  (HARTFORD COURANT, 6/21).

The R&A announced that Royal Troon will host the British Open in '16. The tournament was expected to be played at Troon in '14, but the R&A "delayed its return because of a busy sports schedule in Scotland that year" (GOLFWEEK.com, 6/20).

The USGA announced that next year's Walker Cup, a biennial match between teams of amateur golfers from the U.S. and the U.K., will be played at the National Golf Links of America in Southampton, N.Y. The first Walker Cup in '22 was played at the golf course (NEWSDAY, 6/21).
