Rams, CVC Head Into Arbitration On Edward Jones Dome Upgrades

The Rams and the St. Louis Convention & Visitors Commission are set to place "renovations of the Edward Jones Dome in the hands of three arbitrators." The CVC voted yesterday "to begin the arbitration process," as the CVC and Rams had until today "to reach a deal on renovating the Dome or head into binding arbitration." If the CVC "doesn't agree to renovations that the arbitrators say are required, the Rams would be free to terminate the lease after the 2014 season" (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 6/15).

FS San Diego Takes Aim At Time Warner Cable With Ad Campaign

By John Ourand

FS San Diego has launched a marketing campaign aimed at Time Warner Cable, one of the area's biggest cable operators. TWC has not reached an agreement with Fox to carry the channel, which launched at the beginning of the MLB season. Using the campaign theme of "Our Home. Our City.," Fox Sports bought ad time in print (the San Diego Union-Tribune and the North County Times), radio and mobile digital billboards. Fox also is employing street teams and staging public events. The network would not say how much the campaign costs, only calling the cost "significant."

"We want to remind Padres fans that they have choices if they are being blacked out and can't see the games," said FS San Diego Senior VP & GM Henry Ford. "At the end of the day, we're hoping Time Warner Cable values San Diego sports as they clearly seem to value sports in other markets, including Los Angeles."

College World Series: Vendors Huddle Around TD Ameritrade Park

The College World Series begins today in Omaha, marking the second CWS played at TD Ameritrade Park, and the City Planning Department reports that vendor permits around the event are up from 46 last year to 70 this year. City Planner Dave Fanslau, who handles permit applications, said that vendors are "tending to locate closer to the ballpark and are consolidating at fewer sites." All temporary vendors "must be within the 1,000-foot radius" around the venue established by the NCAA and the city has a "clean zone to help regulate liquor sales and commercial activity" (OMAHA WORLD-HERALD, 6/15).

A limited number of CWS individual reserved seat tickets will go on sale today at 10:00am CT at the TD Ameritrade Park box office. Tickets "must be purchased at the stadium box office," and "only tickets for that day's games will be sold" (OMAHA WORLD-HERALD, 6/15).

Stony Brook's CWS Debut Triggers New TV Ad Touting The School

Stony Brook Univ. is "hoping to build on the attention its baseball team is getting with its first-ever appearance in the College World Series" by producing a 30-second TV spot that will air today on ESPN2 during the school's game against UCLA. SBU President Sam Stanley said that the school is spending $100,000 to produce and air the ad, which "boasts about its achievements in athletics and academics." Stanley said, "We felt compelled to respond to the overwhelming demand for information on Stony Brook" (AP, 6/15).

Chris Hansen Organizes Rally In Support Of Seattle Arena Proposal

Seattle's Occidental Park last night hosted a two-hour rally organized by hedge fund manager Chris Hansen, the lead financier behind the plan to build an NBA-ready arena in the Sodo District. The crowd was "estimated by Hansen's group at 6,000 – and by others at 2,000 to 3,000." Over the course of the event, a "steady stream of former Sonics took the stage, as well as politicians who support the proposal." King County Exec Dow Constantine "told the crowd that the proposal is the best the area will ever get to bring back the NBA and possibly lure an NHL team" (SEATTLE TIMES, 6/15).

Nike Unveils Golf Ball-Inspired U.S. Olympic Track & Field Uniforms

The U.S. track & field uniforms for the London Games were unveiled last night in N.Y., and manufacturer Nike said that the gear "could shave up to 0.023 seconds off 100-meter sprint times." One of the distinguishing features of the uniforms is that they have "dimples that mimic a golf ball." Nike "studied the aerodynamics of golf balls and found the textures and dimples make it more efficient." Patterned patches "are on the forearm and leg, the fastest-moving parts of the body" (AP, 6/15).

LOCOG, Ticketmaster Re-open London Games Ticket Resale Process

The process of reselling tickets for the London Games is "open again after it failed to work properly in January." People with "unwanted tickets can now inform" LOCOG via their Ticketmaster-run ticketing website. Unlike in the original process, "tickets will not be offered back for sale immediately but will be held until they can be offered in batches" on a sport-by-sport basis (BBC.co.uk, 6/14). LOCOG this morning released a new batch of about 50,000 tickets for general sale, including 25,000 field hockey tickets as well as "seats for diving, handball, modern pentathlon, water polo, basketball and the Orbit Tower" (UKPA, 6/15).

EA Sports' Looman, Jets' Revis Play "Madden NFL 13" On "Late Night"

Last night’s edition of NBC’s “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” featured EA Sports Designer Josh Looman and Jets CB Darelle Revis demonstrating the developer's “Madden NFL 13” video game. Looman noted Lions WR Calvin Johnson is the cover athlete and host Jimmy Fallon asked, “Why is not Revis? What’s the problem? I want a New York Jet on the cover.” Looman: “It’s interesting. We now let the fans vote, so I don’t have anything to do with that … (so) maybe next year.” Fallon said the new “Madden” version “comes out every year” and that “every human has to own this. I’m the best at this. I just can’t play real football.” Fallon played Revis, with both players using the Jets. After he threw a long touchdown pass using Jets QB Tim Tebow, Fallon said, “Tebow’s ‘Tebowing’ too.” Looman said of the additions to the game play, “Biggest change we’ve ever made, so huge year for ‘Madden’” (“Late Night With Jimmy Fallon,” NBC, 6/15).

Laugh Track....The Boy In Blue

Dodgers CF Matt Kemp appeared on ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” last night and host Jimmy Kimmel said he was the “best hitter on the best team in baseball.” Kemp said his injured hamstring “feels great” and said of watching games from the bench, “I hate being a cheerleader.” Kemp: “I hate watching baseball. I love to play baseball, but I hate watching it.” Kimmel noted the Dodgers have been “playing well without you. Does that bother you?” Kemp said laughing, “They have been. Maybe I should just stay on the disabled list, let them keep doing their thing.” Kimmel said of Kemp’s eight-year, $160M contract, “It’s a weird thing. When you’re an athlete, everyone knows how much money you make.” Kemp: “That’s messed up, man.” Kimmel said when your agent says, "‘Okay, this is the deal,’ what goes through your head at that time?” Kemp: “Most of the agents are like, ‘That’s not enough. We need more,’ and I was like, ‘Uhhh, I think I can live with a $160 million.’ That happened all so fast. They came with that deal and I signed it. I love L.A.” (“Jimmy Kimmel Live,” ABC, 6/14).

Prior to Game Two of the Heat-Thunder NBA Finals last night, a special edition of “Jimmy Kimmel Live! Game Night” aired with Kimmel talking about last night’s game. Kimmel: “As basketball fans know, Game Two provides a critical, much-needed bridge between Game One and Game Three. Oklahoma City is hosting the Finals for the first time and not only is this the greatest moment in the history of Oklahoma professional sports, this is the only great moment in the history of Oklahoma professional sports. The Thunder did go to the finals three times back when they were known as the Seattle SuperSonics. They moved and renamed Oklahoma City Thunder in 2008. The new owners were looking for a name that would bring to mind a women’s indoor soccer team and they did get it” (“Jimmy Kimmel Live! Game Night,” ABC, 6/14).

In his monologue during the late-night edition of ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” last night, Kimmel said, “The U.S. Open golf championship teed off today in San Francisco. After the first rounds, Tiger Woods is currently tied for second place. Someone who didn't have sex with everyone is in first. I don't know what his name is. … In other boring sports news, Lance Armstrong may be in trouble again. The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency … has formally accused the seven-time Tour de France champion of using performance enhancing drugs. Federal authorities got suspicious when they noticed an American was exercising” (“Jimmy Kimmel Live,” ABC, 6/14).

NBC’s Jay Leno: “Congratulations to the L.A. Kings. They had their big victory parade for winning the Stanley Cup, or as they call it here in L.A., ‘El Cupo de Stanley.’ … You know, at first, I thought the fans were showering the Kings with confetti. Turns out it was just shredded Finals tickets for the Clippers and the Lakers. … Did you see the parade? It was a great parade until Lindsay Lohan crashed a Zamboni into the team bus” (“The Tonight Show,” NBC, 6/14).
