The Yanks (and the Red Sox) are coming

For its first games in Europe, MLB is planning to put on an event that mirrors its tag line: Old Rivalry, New Ground. Here’s some of the old and new to watch for in London:

Presenting sponsor Mitel, a Canada-based, business-focused telecom, will have its logo on helmets while providing communication between dugouts, bullpens and the replay review center in New York. Biofreeze, Johnny Walker and Taco Bell are also sponsors.

A mascot race featuring British characters: King Henry VIII, Winston Churchill, Freddie Mercury and the Loch Ness Monster.

Between-inning entertainment that includes a staple from each club: “Sweet Caroline” from Fenway Park and the grounds crew dancing to “YMCA” as at Yankee Stadium.

MLB expects 70% of the crowd to come from London. Tickets sold out in 30 minutes and generated a waiting list of 125,000. MLB will operate a Fan Fest at London Yards from Friday to Sunday.

Food vendors will sell alcohol in the stands, which typically is not allowed at the venue.

Among the menu items Delaware North will offer are the Boomstick ($31), a two-foot-long hot dog with braised beef American chili, jalapeno cheese sauce, tomato relish, spring onions and jalapenos; and the Dirty Beets Burger ($9), a spinach kale burger.
