Super Bowl takeover planned for SF restaurant

With Super Bowl 50 being held in one of the top food cities in America, the NFL is joining with restaurateur Michael Mina to convert one of his San Francisco restaurants into a football-themed eatery during Super Bowl week.

On The 50 will be the temporary name given to Mina’s RN74 Mission Street restaurant during the entire Super Bowl week, when the wine-centric, 80-seat establishment will be festooned with Super Bowl 50 décor and football memorabilia. The restaurant will also showcase autographed memorabilia and host player appearances.

In what looks like it will be the most food-and-wine-focused Super Bowl ever, RN74 is one of four Mina restaurants within a few blocks of Super Bowl City in downtown San Francisco.

“This city’s on fire for food,” said Mina, who owns 26 restaurants, including eight in the San Francisco market, “and down there, you are really in the center of it all.”

Mary Pat Augenthaler, NFL vice president of events, called the effort “a way of showing how special Super Bowl 50 is and giving anyone a chance to sample how the NFL does events, because anyone can go.”

RN74 will be available to the public from Monday through Sunday of Super Bowl week, although reservations will be recommended.

Along with the usual menu from RN74, Mina is promising a specialty menu, including tributes to the Super Bowl 50 teams.

“We’ll plan appropriately, depending on which teams are in the game,” he said. “If it’s Green Bay, we’d do a high-end play on fried cheese curd or a 10-foot-tall cheese fondue fountain.”

Patrons at On The 50 will be able to bid on a number of unique NFL memorabilia auction items, starting in December. Money collected from sales of those items, along with a portion of the Super Bowl week restaurant proceeds, will be donated to NFL Foundation charities.

GMR Marketing is involved with the creative design, look and feel and all the NFL brand integration at RN74.
