Peacock season: NBC gets 14 Emmy nods for Olympics

Bob Costas was nominated as a studio host for his work with NBC (above) and HBO.
NBC’s coverage of the 2004 Olympics garnered 14 of the network’s 23 Sports Emmy nominations announced last week by the National Television Academy.

The peacock received the second most nominations of any network, behind ESPN, which had 28. Fox received 18, ABC and HBO 17 each, and CBS 12.

The nominations were announced Wednesday in New York City during the Octagon/Street & Smith’s World Congress of Sports. The Sports Emmys will be presented May 2 in New York City.

George Bodenheimer of ABC and ESPN, Sean McManus of CBS, Ken Schanzer of NBC and Ross Greenburg of HBO joined Peter Price, president of the Academy, in announcing the nominees.

HBO won the most Sports Emmys of any network last year, seven, including two each for “Real Sports” and the documentary “The Curse of the Bambino.” ESPN won six, NBC four, and ABC and Fox three each.

This year, the academy will present a lifetime achievement award to Chet Simmons, former president of NBC Sports and ESPN. It also will honor Nike co-founder Phil Knight for contributions to the growth of sports television.
