Deutsche Telekom Announces FIFA 19 Tournament

German telecom Deutsche Telekom "increased its involvement in the esports industry" with the announcement of a FIFA 19 tournament taking place later this month, according to Jack Stewart of THE ESPORTS OBSERVER. The PlayStation 4 exclusive tournament will run alongside the football equivalent, the Telekom Cup, which is a domestic tournament featuring Bayern Munich, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Fortuna Düsseldorf and Hertha Berlin. The esports tournament will conclude as part of the Telekom Cup final in the Düsseldorf Merkur Spiel-Arena on Jan. 13. The esports final will be between the winners of two online qualification rounds, which will feature 128 players on each side. The tournament is open to all German residents. Deutsche Telekom Head of Sports Sponsorship Hiro Kishi said that esports are becoming "increasingly popular," so it is "no surprise" that the company has already been involved in the industry (TEO, 1/8).
