Suncorp Stadium execs think the World Nines is tailor-made for the venue.GETTY IMAGES

Suncorp Stadium execs "want to huddle" with government backers about a bid to host next year's World Nines rugby league tournament. The State Government, Tourism & Events Queensland and Brisbane Marketing have supported the National Rugby League's Magic Round in which all 16 teams will play over four days at Suncorp Stadium in May. Suncorp Stadium sees the World Nines, put on the '19 schedule last weekend by the Rugby League Int'l Federation, as another league event tailor-made "for the venue and Brisbane sports watchers" (Brisbane COURIER-MAIL, 11/14).

Planning permission for a new arena to be built on the site of a speedway and greyhound stadium in Swindon, England, was granted. The Abbey Stadium "will be replaced to make way for the new facility." The stadium, in Blunsdon, is home to '17 Speedway Premier League winners Swindon Robins. The latest plans include shortened racing tracks and a new two-story building with a balcony, kennels and speedway pits (BBC, 11/14).
