Names In The News: Formula 1 Sanctions Red Bull's Max Verstappen

Formula 1 ordered Red Bull driver MAX VERSTAPPEN to do two days of public service for an "angry confrontation" with Force India's ESTEBAN OCON following a collision that cost Verstappen victory in Brazil on Sunday. Verstappen was leading at Interlagos when he tried to pass Ocon, "who tried to retake the position but instead made contact." Verstappen, who called the Frenchman "an idiot" over the radio among, "other more colourful language," was seen on TV "angrily confronting Ocon after the race and giving him a shove" (REUTERS, 11/11). ... Former Glamorgan County Cricket Club captain and head coach MATTHEW MAYNARD will take temporary charge of the county's winter training. The 52-year-old rejoined the Welsh side in Nov. '17 as a consultant batting coach and takes the role following the departure of head coach ROBERT CROFT in October (BBC, 11/12). ... Man City Manager PEP GUARDIOLA is facing a possible charge from the FA "over his pre-derby comments" about referee ANTHONY TAYLOR. Guardiola dismissed concerns about the appointment of Taylor going into the game, insisting there was "no problem" with the Premier League's choice of referee even though the official hails from Wythnshawe in Manchester. But FA rules "prohibit managers from discussing referees before games" (London TELEGRAPH, 11/12). ... Former Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon President BRUNO DE CARVALHO was reportedly "detained as part of an investigation into an attack on players and coaching staff last May by a group of radical supporters." After that attack, "nine players rescinded their contracts with the club, although seven of those players did eventually return" (EFE, 11/11). ... Bayern Munich confirmed FRANCK RIBERY was involved in an "altercation" with a French journalist after Saturday's 3-2 loss to Borussia Dortmund. Eyewitness reports claimed that Ribery pushed and slapped French TV journalist PATRICK GUILLOU during a post-match interview after the reporter "suggested that the 35-year-old was responsible for two of the goals Dortmund scored during the game." Bayern said that the matter "will be dealt with internally" (London INDEPENDENT, 11/12).
