Names In The News: Mo Salah Statue Elicits Ridicule On Social Media

A sculpture of Liverpool and Egypt footballer MOHAMED SALAH unveiled in his home country is "raising eyebrows on social media." The artwork depicts the striker with his arms out wide "in the goalscoring celebration he is known for." But people have suggested it looks more like singer LEO SAYER or MARV the burglar from "Home Alone" (BBC, 11/5). ... Liverpool left XHERDAN SHAQIRI out of its squad to face Serbian side Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League on Tuesday because the club wants to "avoid any distractions" that may be caused by the midfielder's Albanian heritage. After scoring for Switzerland against Serbia in the World Cup this summer, he celebrated by making a double-headed eagle gesture, which symbolizes the Albanian flag (BBC, 11/5). ... Tennis player ROGER FEDERER "weighed in" on the SERENA WILLIAMS controversy, suggesting the American went "too far" in her outburst in September's U.S. Open final. Federer: "I feel like Serena should have walked away. She did, but she went too far. She should have walked earlier" (STUFF, 11/5). ... RAFAEL NADAL pulled out of next week’s ATP Tour Finals in London due to injury, so NOVAK DJOKOVIC will end the year as world No. 1 (REUTERS, 11/5). ... The FA is deciding whether to open an investigation into comments made by League Championship side Stoke City’s JAMES MCCLEAN on Instagram in which he called a number of supporters "uneducated cavemen and c***s" after he was abused again over his "refusal to wear a remembrance poppy." The FA added that it was "looking into an altercation between a small number of Middlesbrough supporters and the winger" at the end of Saturday's game (LONDON TIMES, 11/5). ... ANDREU SUBIES will remain in his role as economic VP of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) after "being implicated last week in an arrest related to Operación Soule." The RFEF said in a statement that Subies "offered to resign," but that it did not accept his resignation (LIBERTAD DIGITAL, 11/5).
