Names In The News: John Cena Will Not Take Part In Saudi Arabia Event

JOHN CENA will not take part in the WWE's Crown Jewel event on Friday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. After being advertised as being part of the show in recent weeks, Cena was "quietly removed from the match." The WWE is moving forward with Crown Jewel "despite the ongoing investigation" into the death of Washington Post journalist JAMAL KHASHOGGI (ESPN.com, 10/30). ... Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) VP ANDREU SUBIES was arrested on Tuesday "as part of a police operation" that previously led to former RFEF President ÁNGEL MARÍA VILLAR "resigning on corruption charges." Subies joined the RFEF in May after LUIS RUBIALES was appointed president. A police spokesperson said, "Subies has been detained as part of an active investigation into the diversion of money from the Catalan Football Federation to private ends" (REUTERS, 10/30). ... The USAIN BOLT experiment is "drawing to its inevitable conclusion" with the Jamaican sprinter to be a "notable absentee" from A-League side Central Coast Mariners training again this week. Bolt will reportedly "continue to work out on his own and nowhere near the Mariners training complex" -- as he did last week -- while the club and his management continue to "thrash out the finer details regarding his possible exit" (THE AUSTRALIAN, 10/31). ... Former England rugby captain WILL CARLING will make "a surprise return to the national set-up as a leadership mentor." Carling will take up the position next week. He will spend two days a week working with the squad as one of three new appointments. Sprint specialist JONAS DODOO joined on a "permanent part-time" basis. JON CLARKE was appointed as the squad's strength and conditioning coach (London TELEGRAPH, 10/29). ... The Court of Arbitration for Sport on Tuesday upheld an appeal by hopeful SERIK KONAKBAYEV against his exclusion from next month's vote to elect the new president of Int'l Boxing Association (AIBA). The association has been "beset by serious financial and governance problems which have put its spot at the 2020 Olympics in jeopardy," with the IOC telling it to fix the current problems by next month or face an Olympic exit (REUTERS, 10/30). ... Last month's tribute match for the late former Ireland football int'l LIAM MILLER raised a total of €1.5M ($1.7M). The money was divided five ways, with €1M ($1.1M) going into a trust for Miller's family to "provide long-term financial security" (IRISH TIMES, 10/30).
