League Notes: Formula 1 Could Split Qualifying Into Four Sessions

The "shape of qualifying" in Formula 1 "could look very different from next year, after it was claimed that Saturday action could be split into four sessions." Auto Motor und Sport reported Liberty Media plans to add a Q4 to qualifying as early as '19. Qualifying is currently split into three sections (GP FANS, 9/22).

Afghanistan cricketer Mohammad Shahzad reported a spot-fixing approach for the upcoming Afghan Premier T20 League to be held in Sharjah from Oct. 5-23. Shahzad, who is currently part of the team playing in the Asia Cup, "promptly reported the approach" to team management before the matter was raised with the Int'l Cricket Council's anti-corruption unit (PTI, 9/24).

The NBA Philadelphia 76ers on Monday announced a new China-focused partnership with Temple University, as the team and the school are "looking to expand their footprint there." This comes ahead of the 76ers' two preseason games in China against the Dallas Mavericks. Temple is "leveraging this partnership" with a "special pregame reception in Shanghai." The 76ers-Temple relationship "will continue in February, when the Sixers host their annual Chinese New Year Celebration game" (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 9/24).

Newly-appointed Pakistan Cricket Board Chair Ehsan Mani said that the dispute with the Board of Control for Cricket in India regarding bilateral series is beyond "amicable settlement" as they are "yet to find a common ground of solution." The PCB claimed Rs 447 crore ($67.2M) as compensation for India not honoring an alleged memorandum of understanding which required the two countries to play six bilateral series between '15 and '23 (PTI, 9/24).

Trainers, jockeys and racecourse representatives met the British Horseracing Authority on Monday to "discuss having a greater say on the issues that affect their businesses, such as the make-up of the fixture list." They have been "considering whether to press for change in certain areas" of the BHA's work. The "extent of any change could alter the parameters of the BHA’s work" (LONDON TIMES, 9/24).
