The prospect of Wales hosting World Cup matches was raised after the U.K. government stated its "willingness to back any potential bid" for the '30 tournament to be held in the U.K., according to Ian Mitchelmore of WALES ONLINE. Following the conclusion of this summer's competition in Russia, a spokesperson for PM Theresa May confirmed the government "would be happy to speak with the relevant football authorities to discuss the possibility of submitting a joint bid to host the tournament." The spokesperson said, "We are happy to sit down with football bodies and discuss any proposals they might have to bid for the World Cup in 2030, we have a superb track record for putting on major sporting events. We would wait for them to come forward with proposals and look at those in the context of our track record, U.K.-wide, of delivering these sorts of events." The World Cup has not been to the U.K. "since England won the competition on home soil" in '66. It is understood that the FA of Wales has "not held any discussions on the possibility of Wales co-hosting" the '30 event (WALES ONLINE, 7/17).
