The Madrid City Council on Monday said that it is open to building a new stadium for the Madrid Open, "which is what the event's organizers are requesting to keep the tournament in the city beyond '21," according to Luca Costantini of EL PAÍS. Madrid City Council Chief Coordinator Luis Cueto said that the possibility will be considered "with a lot of caution when measuring the costs and benefits of the project." He said, "Madrid does not need an 8,000-seat multi-sports facility, but three with 2,000 seats." The Madrid Open organizers, City Council and "all the politicians involved are confident" an agreement can be reached to extend the tournament's contract. La Caja Mágica, where the event currently takes place, has three courts, with 12,500, 3,500 and 2,500 seats, respectively (EL PAÍS, 7/17).
