RFU Insists England Manager Eddie Jones' Contract Is Safe

The Rugby Football Union said that it had "no plans to reconsider" England national rugby team Manager Eddie Jones' contract despite the team losing its past five tests and trailing 2-0 in the series with South Africa after a 23-12 defeat in Bloemfontein on Saturday, according to Owen Slot of the LONDON TIMES. Jones receives an annual salary of £750,000 ($993,600) and the cost of paying out his contract until the World Cup next year would be about £1M ($1.3M). This comes at a time when the RFU is in a "tough financial position" and is having to make up to 100 staff members redundant. The brief statement from the RFU on Sunday said, "The RFU supports Eddie Jones and his coaching team." Jones said on Sunday that England could get itself "out of this rut of poor form" and he is the man to help the team do so. He said, "My job is to make the team win and it is not winning." Asked if it was time for a new England coach, he said, "I don't have to answer that question" (LONDON TIMES, 6/18).
