Hong Kong will host the 2022 Gay Games, becoming the first Asian city to stage the "sports and cultural event." The win comes "amid growing momentum for the gay rights movement in Asia." The Games are expected to attract more than 15,000 participants and provide a HK$1B ($128.2M) boost to the economy, the Hong Kong bid team said. The Federation of Gay Games chose Hong Kong over Guadalajara, Mexico, and Washington, DC, in a vote in Paris on Monday (REUTERS, 10/30).
Lomé, Togo, will host the first FIBA 3x3 Africa Cup from Friday-Sunday. Twenty-two teams (12 men's and 10 women's) from 12 different countries will compete in the covered outdoor venue of the Stade Omnisport Eyadema de Lomé (FIBA).
Eden Park, Auckland's home of rugby and cricket, has been "turned into a golf course" ahead of the inaugural G9 event, which begins on Wednesday. For eight days, teams of up to four golfers will be able to play 90-minute rounds, "teeing off from various positions in the stands and trying to hit one of the holes that have been placed around the playing field" (STUFF, 10/31).
The UAE's friendly with Egypt next week has been canceled. The sides were expected to meet at the Hazza bin Zayed Stadium in Al Ain on Nov. 9, a match that would have marked Manager Alberto Zaccheroni's "first in charge."
