Grupo Globo Secures Comprehensive Brazilian Broadcast Rights To Olympics Through '32

Grupo Globo, Latin America’s largest mass media conglomerate, has secured comprehensive Brazilian broadcast and digital rights to the Olympics through '32, the IOC announced Thursday. It is the second long-term rights deal done by the IOC through at least '23, following on the '14 deal to award American exclusive rights to NBCUniversal for $7.75B. Terms of this deal were not disclosed. "When you look at the current economic issues facing Brazil, it is a major vote of confidence in the Olympics and in Globo’s strength,” said Michael Payne, an Olympics media and communications consultant who brokered the deal for Globo. The deal includes non-exclusive rights for over-the-air TV, and the IOC may sell rights to other broadcasters as well. But Grupo Globo has secured exclusive rights to subscription TV, Internet and mobile coverage. The parties have also agreed to collaborate on the in-development Olympic Channel. "Our relationship with the IOC and the Olympic Movement goes back many years and this long-term renewal of our agreement shows the absolute faith that Grupo Globo has in our country, in the Olympic spirit and in the future,” Chair & CEO Roberto Irineu Marinho said in a statement. "Taking the Olympic values to the Brazilian People, across many different media platforms, is a challenge that Grupo Globo is proud to assume."
