The German Football League (DFL) has appointed ANSGAR SCHWENKEN "as its new director of football matters and fans." The former GM of 2nd Bundesliga side VfL Bochum "will take over his new role on Nov. 30" (SPONSORs, 9/15). ... The Scottish Exhibition & Conference Centre hired MARK LAIDLAW as its new director of operations. He was most recently director of management services at Scottish Rugby Union. SECC noted that Laidlaw had, in this SRU role, been responsible for the "development of Murrayfield Stadium as a world-class sporting and events venue." He will be responsible for all operational and logistical aspects and event delivery across the 64-acre SECC campus (HERALD SCOTLAND, 9/14). ... Paris 2024 CEO ETIENNE THOBOIS announced that three-time Olympic canoeing champion TONY ESTANGUET will join BERNARD LAPASSET as co-president of the Paris bid for the 2024 Olympics, "putting a top athlete at the forefront of the campaign" (ISPORTCONNECT, 9/15).

COACHES/MANAGERS: Former Argentine int'l MATIAS ALMEYDA was named head coach of relegation-threatened Liga MX side Chivas Guadalajara on Tuesday, just a day after JOSE MANUEL DE LA TORRE was fired from the position and club President NESTOR DE LA TORRE was also let go. Almeyda has "no previous experience in Liga MX" and is "best known as a coach" for his work in guiding River Plate back to Argentina's first division in '12 (ESPN, 9/15). ... Former Bolivian national football team coach XABIER AZKARGORTA was named head coach of Bolivian club Oriente Petrolero, which rescinded the contract of ROBERTO POMPEI (EFE, 9/15).
