League Notes: Australian Rugby Union Hit With Subpoenas In Di Patston Case

Lawyers for former Australian National Rugby Team Business Manager Di Patston "have issued subpoenas to the Australian Rugby Union as they seek access to key information in the adverse action case being played out in the Federal Court." Patston will seek compensation under the Fair Work Act "after she resigned last year in the wake of the Kurtley Beale text message scandal" (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 4/21). ... On Wednesday, the A-League players' union -- the PFA -- will unveil its first report into the difficulties players face "in transition into retirement and the statistics from their surveys show a concerning figure for mental health problems." According to the survey of 164 past players -- of which half were internationals -- one in five "experienced mental health issues shortly after retiring, a figure higher than the national average" (THE AGE, 4/21). ... The discovery of an electric device, "commonly referred to as a 'jigger' in racing circles, has sparked an inquiry centred on a small Mornington stable." Stewards are in the "early stages of gathering statements from a licensed trainer and a track rider," among others present. It has been alleged the hand-held unit was "dropped during a gallop and recovered by a trackwork supervisor, who handed it into the stewards" (THE AUSTRALIAN, 4/22). ... Canada will act to keep the World Anti-Doping Agency in Montreal after European nations "pushed for it to be moved, saying the body could not adequately protect athletes' data." A government source said that some European nations "wanted WADA to be relocated to Europe on the grounds that Canada's personal privacy laws did not cover the agency, which could therefore not guarantee the safety of athletes' data" (REUTERS, 4/20).
