Brasileiro Clubs Decide Against Medida Provisória; Flamengo 'Stands Alone'

Representatives from the 20 Brasileiro Série A sides met Wednesday at the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) HQ in Rio de Janeiro to "evaluate the text" of the Medida Provisória and "they had one consensus: they want changes to the document," according to Daniel Mundim of GLOBO ESPORTE. The CBF will "write a document with modifications proposed by the entity" to submit to the Brazilian congress in regards to the MP, which has already "received 181 suggested amendments" since its signing by President Dilma Rousseff on March 19. Various points of the MP "were questioned" by club leaders. Brasileiro side Santos President Modesto Roma Júnior said, "We will exercise our position to defend the points that we understand need modifications. ... Nobody will adhere [to the rules] the way it is now" (GLOBO ESPORTE, 4/8). In São Paulo, Almir Leite reported the decision of Brasileiro side Flamengo's deliberative council for its new fiscal responsibility measures will "hardly have followers." Club management "probably will not 'legislate against themselves' unless required." Lawyer Eduardo Carlezzo, who is a specialist in sports legislation, said, "It's an advancement, one extremely positive step in the professionalism and transparency direction that Flamengo has been doing. It's a fantastic decision at a time in which there is great mobilization for improved management" (ESTADÃO, 4/9).
