FA Weighing Bid To Host Euro 2028, Hoping Wembley Will Host Euro 2020 Final

The FA will "not rule out a bid to host the European Championship" in '28 and is confident that Wembley "will win the right to stage the final of Euro 2020," according to Martyn Ziegler of the PA. Only Munich is "standing against Wembley" to host the final and semifinals of the '20 tournament -- which will be staged in multiple countries -- "but Germany may pull out to concentrate on bidding for Euro 2024." FA General Secretary Alex Horne said, "We're really confident with our bid" (PA, 8/28). The BBC reported winning bids will be announced on Sept. 19 and Horne believes "one of Dublin, Glasgow and Cardiff could miss out on hosting group games." He "feels Germany are concentrating heavily on 2024" and added, "I'm not going to dwell on their politics. I'm expecting that they're not going to push very hard, to put it another way. They've made it very clear they want 2024 and they're going to have a go at 2024, so they're not going to be pushing hard for the semifinals and final" (BBC, 8/28).
