Canada Course Adding Scenic Site, England Course Set To Break Ground

The second course at Canada's new Cabot Links resort "will occupy a clifftop site" a few miles north of the existing course, which is situated at the heart of the town of Inverness on Cape Breton, according to GOLF COURSE ARCHITECTURE. Developer Ben Cowan-Dewar said that Cabot Cliffs is set to begin construction in the spring and will be designed by architects Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. Coore has completed a routing, and, along with Cowan-Dewar and co-developer Mike Keiser, "will make the final decision on hole choices at a site visit next month." Two clubhouse locations are still under consideration. Either way, the course will include a "dramatic ocean carry par three along the lines of Cypress Point's famous sixteenth at the northern end of the property" (GOLF COURSE ARCHITECTURE, 9/18).

BREAKING GROUND: The Heartlands Development at Whitman, England has "reached a major milestone," with work set to begin on the construction of a new privately funded M8 Junction. The new junction will provide the main access route to Heartlands, a £650M ($1B) business, retail, residential and leisure destination, providing around 4,000 new jobs. The developer, Ecosse Regeneration, has signed contracts with TransportScotland and Balfour Beatty "allowing work to begin on the site." Funded by the Royal Bank of Scotland, the new intersection will be the first full motorway junction in Scotland to be entirely privately funded. One of the "largest reclamation and regeneration projects in Europe," the Heartlands Development currently includes plans for 2,000 homes, as well as leisure, education and community facilities (GOLFBUSINESSCOMMUNITY.com, 9/23).
