Korean Baseball Enjoying High Ticket Sales, But Players Boycott After Tenth Team Denied

The Korea Baseball Organization is "enjoying the height of its popularity with record ticket sales," according to Jung Min-ho of the KOREA TIMES. The league reached "the million attendance mark" in just 65 games on April 29, beating the previous 79 games it took to reach that level in '95. Now, the KBO is aiming to reach 4 million "at the fastest pace ever." With 3,952,118 spectators so far, the original goal of getting 7 million to the ballparks this season "seems highly possible." At the current pace "8 million could even be attainable," as just 251 games out of the 532 have been played (KOREA TIMES, 6/25). Meanwhile, in Seoul Jung added that the Korea Professional Baseball Players Association has decided to boycott the All-Star Game in July "in a bid to convey their opposition to the KBO's recent decision not to add another club to the nine-team professional league." KPBPA Exec Dir Park Chung-sik said, "Making a 10th team before it is too late is a more fundamental issue than having the All-Star Game. We are very sorry for our fans, but we will not participate in the event" (KOREA TIMES, 6/25).
