Euro Host Countries Poland and Ukraine Spent $31.4B In Construction

The construction and reforms for Euro 2012 along with the infrastructure improvements in the host cities have cost Poland and Ukraine approximately €25B ($31.4), according to the EFE. Saxo Bank analyst Sverrir Sverrisson conducted the analysis which showed that Poland spent €16B ($20.1B) and Ukraine €9B ($11.3B). Sverrison believes that politicians and governments “overestimate the profits” from large int'l competitions. Sverrisson said, “History almost always repeats itself, in all events. The governments of host countries realize expensive infrastructure projects, improving roads, railroads or stadiums, which usually does not generate any profit in the long term” (EFE, 6/6).
